Fred D Chatelain

Our dear father Fred D. Chatelain, age 87, formerly of Annandale, VA, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2023 in Springfield, VA. Born and raised in Port Arthur, TX to the late Louis and Harriet Chatelain of Mansura and Cottonport, LA., Fred served from 1957-58 as a US Army Staff Sergeant in a helicopter supply and repair unit based in Germany. The first in his family to attend college, Fred graduated in 1962 from the University of Texas, Austin School of Pharmacy on the GI Bill. After moving his young family to Northern Virginia, in 1965 he became the Assistant Director of Pharmacy at Fairfax Hospital. In 1975, he joined INOVA Alexandria Hospital as Director of Pharmacy Services, where he proudly worked for 27 years. Upon his retirement, he was until recently a regional experiential coordinator for the Shenandoah University retail pharmacy internship program. Committed to service to others, he was actively involved in his neighborhood association, and various civic organizations including the Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) and the Optimists Club. He was a member of the Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists (VSHP). A longtime parishioner of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Fred wore many hats through the years serving the St. Alban’s community as a lay minister, altar boy, usher, mowing crew, and most Sundays as a coffee server, and a member of the budget committee. Through the years, he enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife Barbara, including the annual family beach weeks in Nags Head, NC, international cruises, and often visiting family and friends throughout the United States. Fred was a lifelong learner. With his sincere, inquisitive and humble nature, he enjoyed meeting people and learning new things everywhere he went. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and one brother. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Barbara, his sons Ron (Margarita) Chatelain, Todd (Patty Wood) Chatelain and Scott (Mary Beth) Chatelain, and daughter Julia Chatelain King. “Pawpaw” loved his grandchildren Andrew, Matthew and Emily Chatelain, Carla (Brian) Callihan, Laila (Chad) Habeeb, and Caitlin and Adam King; great grandchildren Tommy and Charley Bosley, and Stevie Habeeb, and his nieces and nephews. A visitation for Fred will be held Wednesday, April 19, 2023 from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151. A funeral service will occur Thursday, April 20, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at St. Albans Episcopal Church, 6800 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003. Family and friends are invited to a reception at St. Albans after the service. A private interment will follow at National Cemetery, Falls Church, VA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, Annandale, VA or volunteer at ACCA (Annandale Christian Community for Action).
