John was born in Washington DC, the son of David R & Eileen (Kroll) Apker who preceded him in death.
John was a graduate of Radford University and Lake Braddock Secondary School-where he met his high school sweetheart, Mardi. They were married August 9, 1986 in Springfield where they resided.
John, a CPA, worked in auditing/accounting roles at several accounting firms to include both Price Waterhouse and Coopers & Lybrand-prior to their merger as PwC, in the Federal Government program Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) during the 80s and 90s, finishing his Federal government career working until his untimely retirement, in the Inspector General's office of NASA as an auditor of space programs. NASA was his favorite position, as his NASA family was near, dear, and extremely supportive to him and his family during his career with them and his forced retirement after his first stroke in 2018.
John also spent time as a Volunteer Firefighter at the Greater Springfield fire department Company 22 during the 90s until the late 2000s working both in the field on the apparatus/assignments and at their bingo hall. He enjoyed his firefighting crew/company and assisting the public in need. In addition to fire-fighting, John was a lover of animals (especially his beloved Belgian Malinois dogs), travel, roller coasters, fine dining and music. Helping others was extremely important to him, and he was a secret Santa to many children & families in need, as it brought him tremendous joy.
He is survived by his beloved Mardi, their only daughter, Keira and his siblings: brother, David, and sister Marci (Chris) Larson.
He wished only to have his immediate family in attendance at his viewing followed by a private cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations would be appreciated on his behalf to help the Los Angeles fire fighter fighting the wild fires at:
