

John was born in Teaneck, New Jersey to John and Helen Deeney on November 29, 1935. He graduated from Saint Cecilia’s High School, Englewood, New Jersey. He then graduated from the College of Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, and accepted a commission in the United States Marine Corps in 1957. He married Carolyn A. Hughes on February 22, 1958 in Tenafly, New Jersey. John served in the Marine Corps until June 1969 which included overseas tours and combat deployments to Vietnam for which he was awarded the National Service Defense, Vietnamese Service, and Vietnamese Campaign Medals in addition to Presidential Unit Citation and Combat Action Ribbons. After his Marine Corps career John worked in the banking field, and for Housing and Urban Development. He then went on to become an assistant varsity football coach and head lacrosse coach at West Springfield High School for more than twenty years where he mentored hundreds of young athletes. He was also active in his community by coaching summer football camps for Art Monk, Joe Paterno, and Michael Strahan. He was an usher at Saint Bernadette’s Catholic Church and a member of Knights of Columbus.
John is preceded in death by his son Michael P. Deeney, grandson Timothy P. Large, his sister Maureen A. Donohue and her husband James M. Donohue.
John is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Carolyn A. Deeney; daughter Kathleen (Rick) Large and daughter Colleen (Brian) Fitzgibbons; Daughter In-Law Lina Deeney; his sister Ellen (Ralph) Thorsland; grandchildren Melissa (Michael) Stickley, Sean, Matthew (Natalie), and Daniel Large; Carolyn (Derrick) Austring, Michael (Jennifer) Kessler, Ryan (Savanna) Deeney, Juan Pablo Martinez, and Kaitlin Fitzgibbons and Joseph (Katherine) Fitzgibbons; great-Grandchildren Bryan, Patrick, Eric, Jay, and Elena Large; Cara and Donovan Austring; Wyatt Deeney, Christopher and Alexander Martinez; and Cecilia and John Fitzgibbons. John leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will receive friends at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at the Demaine Funeral Home 5308 Backlick Road Springfield, Virginia 22151.
A memorial funeral mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 16, 2025 with Monsignor Bob Cilinski of Nativity Catholic Church at 6400 Nativity Lane, Burke, Virginia, 22015.
In lieu of flowers donations made in his honor to the Marine Corps Semper Fi Fund, or the American Heart Association would be greatly appreciated.
