I miss my dad especially before he found out that he had a tumor n 1981. But he lived 30 some more years what a miracle he saw me graduate high school and picked me up from Radford University. He was a really cool dad

Our family moved to Springfield, VA in 1985.  One of the first families we got to know at church was the Wu family.It has been a joy to watch Joseph's and Cecilia's children grow up and have families of their own.  I know they will all miss their husband and dad but they will see him again someday and in the meantime we pray that happy memories will comfort them.  He was quite a guy!

Cecilia, I was sorry that my son and I couldn't come to the memorial service.  We will certainly miss Joe.  It has been wonderful seeing the two of you every year at the EFL Holiday Open House.  Joe was a lovely man, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him and call him my friend.  My deepest condolences to you and your family.

I would like to share with you some of the things that I know about Joe. But before that, I do need to make a confession. I owe Joe an apology, and a very big one too!

Some of you may not know that Joe was my brother in law. 45 years ago, Julia and I were married. Joe, Cecilia and David came to our wedding. David, you wouldn't remember that because you were still a tiny baby at that time. Joe, in place of my father-in-law, gave Julia away. No, he didn't give her away. He gave her to me, and she is the most precious gift that I've ever received in my life. I was so happy, so overjoyed that I forgot to say "Thank You" to Joe. To my regret, up until today, I have never thank him for that. Joe: "When I see you again, I'll definitely thank you face-to-face."

I believe we all know Joe very well. However, some of you may not know what I'm going to share with you now. 

We all know that Joe was a very humble man, but I do know that he was very proud of being a civil, structural engineer. Every time, when he talked to me about his work, it was always with pride. The picture of Double Arch bridge, Natchez Trace Parkway, TN that you just saw is one of many, many projects that he designed or supervised. As a structural engineer myself, I know how difficult, how magnificent some of the projects are. No wonder, Joe was so proud of them. 

Though I never worked with him on any of engineering projects, I know that he was an excellent engineer. He planned everything thoroughly and watched every detail meticulously. How would I know? Every time when we visited him, he would have local maps prepared. All the points of interest were marked and all the routes I needed to travel were highlighted. Directions were carefully written down in detail. And this was even before Yahoo Map or Map Quest era.

Both Joe and I were members of American Society of Civil Engineers, ASCE in short. There are four levels of regular membership within ASCE, associate member, member, full member and fellow. One works his or her way to get into next higher level. Fellow is the highest level of regular membership. When I retired 11 years ago, I quit ASCE. My level was only at the level of member. But Joe attained the honor of being a fellow, in 2004. He never said it but I know that he was very proud of it. Joe, we are also proud of you!

I have many, many other things that I would love to share with you, but I think that I better stop here. I would like to conclude with telling Joe this: "Joe! We are happy that you have completed your race; that you are going to receive the crown of glory that our Lord lay hold of for you! But we will certainly miss you, and miss you very much!"

I didn't know Mr. Wu, but dearly love his daughter, Karen. He (and Mrs. Wu) must have been godly parents to have raised her.

We were so blessed to know Joseph as part of our Kirkwood family. His joyous singing, infectious smile, and kind words at every meeting will be greatly missed. We send you our warmest prayers.

A-cu's gentle smile and laugh will always make me smile.  Praying for you, A-gim and for David, Daniel and Karen and their families.  I so wish that I could be there to celebrate his life with you all.  I'll be praying for peace and comfort for you all!

If my friend David Wu is a reflection of this man, he must have been pretty awesome. Celebrating a life well lived.
