May Edith Carter

Of Springfield, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2015 at the age of 95. Beloved wife of over 40 years to the late Clifton Hall Carter, Jr., dear mother of Carol May Dunn and mother-in-law of Everett Dunn, she is also survived by close family members Kay, Karen, Jim, Sam, and Meghan Dunn as well as other nieces and nephews.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, May lived in Germany with her husband during his time there following World War II before returning to New Jersey and then settling in Springfield, VA in 1967. She was an accomplished actress who trained at the Pasadena Playhouse in California and was performing until only two months prior to her passing. Her greatest passions, in addition to the theater, were the education of children and working for the betterment of the community. She accomplished these goals as an active member of The Woman’s Club of Springfield for over 43 years, spending many of those years as the head of the Education Program, giving her time, love, and efforts to improving lives of many and creating opportunities for the children in the Springfield community. Additionally, she will be missed by all of her friends in the Forever Young exercise class at Gold’s Gym where she was still getting her knees high until recently.

May was laid to rest with her husband, parents and grandparents in Newark, New Jersey. Her family invites friends to join them for a Celebration of Life at Peace Lutheran Church, 6362 Lincolnia Road, Alexandria, VA, on Saturday, January 30, beginning at 2:30 pm.
