

Moira Hurley McAveney, MD of Springfield, VA died October 1 after a long, courageous battle with lobular breast cancer. She was born on June 17, 1942 in New York City. Moira graduated from Chestnut Hill College with a degree in Chemistry. She obtained her medical degree from Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania and served her residency in internal medicine at DC General Hospital. She worked as an urgent care physician, but her greatest joy as a doctor was found in her medical missionary work which included caring for victims of Hurricane Katrina and serving the people of Thomassique on her many trips to Haiti. She was known for her selflessness and care for others. Moira was a devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother. Her family was her greatest love. Moira is survived by her loving husband, William J. McAveney, MD; children Megan McAveney, Kathleen Campbell (Chris), William McAveney, John Paul McAveney (Selena) and Marianne Jeffries (Jacob); siblings Sean Hurley, Cathleen Lawrence, Brenda Sauerwald and Ellen Hurley; and grandchildren Aiden, Bridget and Maeve Campbell; Tierney and Brayden Jeffries; and Colm McAveney. She was predeceased by her son Francis McAveney and brother Brian Hurley. A Funeral Mass will be held at Church of the Nativity in Burke, VA on Monday, October 8, 2018 at 10:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society.
