
Raymond (Ray) Russell Rieling, Jr. (82), a resident of Greenspring retirement community for the past 9 years, died Dec. 17 at INOVA Healthplex Springfield-Franconia in Springfield, VA. Ray was born to Raymond Russell Rieling, Sr. and Irma Victoria Rieling (nee McClintock) in Philadelphia, PA in 1931 and moved to Kansas City, MO at a young age. He attended Border Star Elementary School and Southwest High School and graduated from Baker University in Baldwin, KS with a degree in Business Administration. He was employed in the sales division of IPI/Inmont/BASF Corporation where he was a tireless advocate for his customers and company. Ray was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church in Kansas City, MO and joined Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington, DC when he and his wife relocated to Springfield, VA to be near family. Ray was an Eagle Scout in Troop 24 in Kansas City and remained active in scouting while he mentored his sons in their achieving the rank of Eagle. He was a member of the Boy Scout Heart of America Council Tribe of Mic-O-Say where he was a Sachem in the Tribal Council. Ray was a member of the Ararat Shrine in Kansas City as a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and continued his involvement in Springfield, VA. He was an avid golfer, gardener, swimmer, competitive Wii bowler and enjoyed traveling until the past few months. Ray is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sylvia Spencer Rieling; his son, Russ Rieling and his wife, Sheila, of Great Falls, VA; son, Dale Rieling and his wife, Victoria Bussert, of North Caldwell, NJ and Berea, OH; three grandsons, Raymond, Conor, and John Rieling; his sister Joy Newcomb and her husband Eldon of Madison, WI; and six beloved nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the Chapel at Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield, VA on December 27th at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Greenspring Benevolent Care Fund (Greenspring Philanthropy Office, 7410 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, VA 22150), Central United Methodist Church (5144 Oak Street, Kansas City, MO 64112) or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
