He was born in Greenville, Mississippi to David and Dorothy Gavin on August 19, 1932. He joined the military at age 17. He served in Japan, France, Korea and Viet Nam as well as several locations in the U.S.
Rex met his bride in Chaumont, France, while stationed at Smoutier Air Force Base. He was married on March 8, 1958 to Fernande Voirin. He loved France where he and his wife built a vacation home and would return nearly every year to visit family and travel.

He helped develop software that was utilized by banks and mortgage companies throughout the US. He received many awards for his achievements, but was very humble. He considered his greatest success to be taking care of his family.
While stationed in France, Rex had a sideline. He was a comedian and Master of Ceremonies for many famous personalities including Marcel Marceau and Johnny Halliday. He also had a wonderful voice and enjoyed singing at church.
Rex was a very generous man. He gave to many organizations to include Shriners Hospital for Children, the Cheyenne River Indian Outreach for Children, and Wounded Warriors.
