Samuel (Sammy) Stephen Gonzales, of Springfield, Virginia, passed away peacefully after battling cancer for 4 years, on Thursday, June 25, 2020. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 1, 1955 to Samuel E. Gonzales and Nancy L. Gonzales. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Linda Stocks (Johnny) as well as Warren and Sis Sheaffer (Terri’s parents). He served as a board member of Trustees/Property Care at St. John’s Methodist Church for many years. Sammy is survived by his wife Terri of 38 years, daughters Nicole Acevedo (Will), Brittani Gonzales, grandson William Stephen Acevedo, sisters Brenda Gonzales and Anna Putze (Gery), brother Danny Gonzales as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Sammy was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to everyone. Sammy loved sports and really enjoyed being able to see the Washington Nationals win the World Series in October. He also enjoyed basketball, football, and hockey. He worked in the roofing business for over 40 years, but he was forced to give up the career he loved due to his health. He spent his free time gardening, fishing, hunting, bowling, and especially playing with his grandson. He enjoyed watching various sport games live and on TV with his daughter Brittani and dancing with his wife Terri. Sammy loved his family. He always had a smile on his face and was willing to help others in need. A special thank you to friends, St. John's family and to the people at Capital Caring Hospice for their loving care and support during his final days. Also, the family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Demaine Funeral home and St. John's for being very accommodating and understanding during this difficult time. Visitation hours will be held on Friday, October 16th, from 6pm-8pm at St. John’s UMC. A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday, October 17th, at 2pm with limited capacity, therefore we are encouraging people to visit on Friday. The service will be live streamed for those who cannot attend. Details on the live stream will be posted at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the cancer society, St. John's UMC and hospice capital caring. If you would like to send flowers, please send to St. John’s UMC.
