Sang Hyon is survived and cherished by his son Doo Hyong; daughter-in-law Jennifer (Terry); and grandchildren, Devon Jayin and Je-Sung Glen.
Sang Hyon was preceded in death by his wife of over 40 years, Pyong Su Kim; his parents, Kum Sok Yi and Wol Pun Kim; his sons Tok Hyong and Tae Hyong; and his youngest brother Sang Ok.
Sang Hyon grew up in South Korea, where he married and where his three sons were born, two of whom he delivered himself. In the early seventies, he brought his young family to the U.S., where he worked as a truck driver, construction crew lead, and auto mechanic.
He was a deacon in the Northern Virginia Korean Presbyterian Church and a volunteer and participant at the senior center. He was active in a photography club and enjoyed attending and photographing many civic events; several of his pictures were used in a local Korean newspaper. In 2023, he received the President’s Gold Award for Volunteer Service.
Sang Hyon lived by finding joy and beauty in whatever circumstances he found himself in. He loved talking with friends, traveling, and fishing. Most days of his retirement would find him at a park or even looking out his window, photographing a hummingbird sipping from a flower, a squirrel stealing a persimmon, an eagle grabbing a fish from the river, or a dancer laughing during a fall celebration. Quite often he’d sneak home the fruit or seeds or leaves of a plant (usually yellow) that caught his eye, and a new planter would soon spring up inside or outside the house.
A visitation for Sang Hyon will be held Tuesday, February 11, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Demaine Funeral Home, 5308 Backlick Road, Springfield, VA 22151. Following the visitation will be a funeral service at 12:00 PM.
