Col. Norman US Army Retired is survived by a wife, Sharon Fine-Norman, five children: Russell Norman, Michael Norman, Janice Norman Brown, Elizabeth Norman Lloyd and April Norman Sellers, four grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, and two previous wives: Stella Lybrand Norman and Brigette Lepage Norman.
William is a 30 year U.S. Army veteran and served with distinction in the Vietnam War. “Billy Norman” grew up primarily in North Little Rock AR among an extended family. As a kid, he enjoyed hunting, woodworking and all things mechanical, including vintage cars. The enjoyment of these hobbies extended throughout his life. ¬Upon graduation from University of Arkansas, Fayetteville with a BSME, he spent his early professional years split between the Oil Industry and the Army. Eventually the opportunities to do new work (bring the M-1 Abrams tank production online, preview and evaluate cutting edge technology from Sandia Labs), meet new people (Yugoslavian dictator Tito) and travel won out. Bill lived in a dozen states, several countries and traveled and worked in dozens of states and countries, spending 8 years in Germany. As his children grew up, he worked with numerous scouting and youth groups. Perhaps the most important of these was the Sitzmarkers Ski Club at Patch Barracks, Stuttgart Germany from 1973 to 1978. Bill loved sharing stories about his time at Patch Barracks, working and traveling throughout western Europe and skiing with the Sitzmarkers, features in a good many of those stories. Later in his career, he had several assignments at the Pentagon, several defense contracting jobs (including exercises and evaluations for NASA), sold Real Estate (found homes for friends and family). Bill could not remain idle. He always had several projects going at once, involving wood carving, antique refinishing, vintage car restoration, political and economic discussion groups and advising family and friends on financial matters. Bill thought every disagreement could be resolved with a good rational conversation. You could hold any viewpoint at variance with his, but you had better bring facts to support your position and be prepared to be bombarded with his counterpoints.
Bill would tell you that he lived a wonderful and lucky life. No matter where he was or what the situation, he was present and involved, working toward a resolution or goal. He would remind each of us to enjoy family, friends and life.
