

Bill O'Quinn was born at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia on July 31, 1930 to Carl Harvey O'Quinn and Dorothy Alice Andrews O'Quinn. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Irene Stofka O'Quinn in 1997 and his son William Russell O'Quinn in 1982, and his one sister Lucy Carl O'Quinn Doody in 2016. He is survived by his two daughters Anita O'Quinn of Falls Church, Virginia and Janet Lucy O'Quinn of Kennesaw, Georgia; also by his grandchildren Roni Irene O'Quinn and Jason Weller of Winter Springs, Florida and Ann Michelle O'Quinn Dau and Steve Dau of Kennesaw, Georgia. He has six great grandchildren Quinn O'Quinn, Elissa Sherr, Aiden Weller, and Willow Weller of Winter Springs, Florida as well as Riley Dau and Carter Dau of Kennesaw, Georgia. He is also survived by his brothers-in-law Mike Stofka (Karen) of Watertown, New York and Charles Stofka (Joan) of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Ed Stofka (Arlene) of Ft Myers, Florida as well as many nieces and nephews.
Bill grew up in East Point, Georgia. As a boy he delivered papers for the Atlanta Constitution. He was an amateur magician starting at age 8, and continuing throughout his life. He graduated from Russell High School in East Point.
In 1949 he joined the Navy, working as an Electronics Engineer. He served on the USS Oriskany on a Med Cruise and then went around the horn and served in the Korean War. He met his wife Irene while he was in the Navy and she was in Brooklyn Methodist Nursing School in Brooklyn, New York. After they were married in 1953, Bill taught electronics in Great Lakes, Illinois and later served on the USS Bunting in Key West, Florida. He went to Enewetak Atoll during the atomic bomb testing to help with Operation Hardtack in 1958. After serving 9 years in the Navy he took an honorable discharge and began working for Philco in Rhode Island for a year. In 1960 he settled in Northern Virginia with his family, first in Arlington County then later in Fairfax County. He worked as a civil servant for the Navy Department - Naval Electronics Systems Command on the NAVMACS project, and just before retirement he worked for Unisys.
Bill was a life long member of the Methodist Church belonging to East Point Methodist in Georgia, Cherrydale UMC, Epworth UMC, and Mineral UMC, in Virginia, and Marietta First UMC in Marietta, Georgia.
Bill enjoyed the out of doors - camping, hiking, canoeing, and mountaineering. He set a goal to climb the highest peak in each of the 50 states and accomplished 43 out of the 50 including Mount McKinley in Alaska in 1982.
Bill was well known for his story telling and teaching abilities, often combining the two. He was active in Boy Scouts his whole life. As a youth he was in Boy Scout Troop 54 East Point, Georgia. In the 1960's-70's he was Scoutmaster for Troop 149 in Cherrydale, Virginia and troop 988 in Fairfax, Virginia. In the early 2000's he was Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 325 out of Naples, Florida. He ran two summer camps for Troop 325 on his lake property in Louisa, Virginia. He was also involved with Troop 183 in Mineral, Virginia.
In 1992 Bill and Irene retired to Lake Anna in Louisa County, Virginia where they enjoyed boating, barbequing and sunsets. In 2016 Bill moved to Kennesaw, Georgia. In his last years his greatest joy came from his six Great Grandchildren Quinn, Elissa, Aiden, Riley, Carter and Willow.
Visitation will be Sunday November 11 from 2 - 4 pm and 6 - 8 pm at Demaine Funeral Home located at 5308 Braddock Road, Springfield, Virginia 22151. Funeral services will be at 1 pm on Monday November 12, 2018 at Cherrydale United Methodist Church located at 3701 Lorcom Lane, Arlington, Virginia 22207. Following the service will be a reception at the church. Burial will be on Tuesday November 13 at 10:30 am at Fairfax Memorial Park, 4401 Burke Station Road, Fairfax, Virginia 22032.
