

On December 1, 2016, William Tyson peacefully passed away in Springfield, VA. The beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Jane Tyson. He is survived by his son John D. Tyson and his wife Judith Joy Tyson, his daughter Martha Jane Tyson Jordan and her husband Randy Jordan, and their children Tim, Lisa, and Laura and great grandchildren, Owen and Hannah, and many more family and friends.
William attended North Georgia College 1943-44, Alabama Polytechnical Institute 1944, and because of the GI Bill was enabled to attended law school at Mercer University 1946-1950, where he graduated Juris (cum laude) and, also, where he was the Founder and Editor- in-Chief of the Mercer Law Review.
He married Elizabeth Jane Brundage in 1950 who was in attendance at Mercer where she graduated with a degree in teaching.
William Tyson then went on to join the U.S. Army where he served from 1944-1946 in the European Theater of WWII after Germany and Italy had surrendered and where he performed many critical duties.
In 1961 William Tyson was assigned to Seoul, South Korea where he was part of the team that met daily at the DMZ around the negotiating table with the North Koreans. His family resided in Columbus, Georgia.
From 1952-1971 he was a member of the U.S. Army JAG. From 1967-71 William Tyson was the Director of the Legislation and Selected Policies division within the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense located at the Pentagon. He retired with the rank of Colonel, Judge Advocate Generals Corps, US Army while residing in Northern Virginia.
From 1971-73 William Tyson was Senior Attorney, in the General Crimes Section, Criminal Division, in the Department of Justice located in Washington, D.C.
From 1973-74 he served as Assistant Director of the Southern Region, in the Executive Office of US Attorneys in Washington D.C. From 1974-1976 he was the Assistant Director for Operations, Executive Office for US Attorneys, as well as the Attorney and Counselor of the Supreme Court of the United States, in the Department of Justice.
Then during the presidency of Jimmy Carter he was Acting Deputy Director of the U.S. Department of Justice. From 1976-77 he served as Deputy director of the U.S.Attorney General Offices in the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. From 1987-88 he was the Director of the Executive Office for Immigration Review located in Bailey's Crossroads, in Arlington, Virginia. In 1988 he then retired.
Services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements under the direction of Demaine Funeral Home, Springfield, VA.
