John Joseph Schembri, 80, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on September 2, 1944, to Joseph Schembri and Theresa Vella, John was a man who lived a life defined by love, service, and dedication to those he cherished.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents and his loving wife, Judy Schembri, whom he married on November 20, 1976. John and Judy shared a bond like no other, and he remained devoted to her memory after her passing in 2013. His heart never wavered in his love for her, and their union was an enduring example of true partnership and devotion.
John is survived by his two daughters, Lisa and Katie Schembri, who were the lights of his life. He is also survived by his sister, MaryAnn Saisi (Bob), and his brothers, Chuck Schembri (Lynda) and Vic Schembri. He leaves behind cherished nephews Stephen Saisi (Roz), David Saisi (Connie), and Michael Saisi (Pam), as well as many friends who will remember him fondly.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, John served with honor during the Vietnam War even earning the Army Commendation Medal. His commitment to serving others extended beyond his military years, as he was an active member of the Masons and the Shriners. John was particularly dedicated to his work with the Shriners Hospitals, where he volunteered to transport children and their families to hospital lodging and hosted weekly bingo nights for patients and their loved ones.
John loved to be outdoors, and his passion for gardening and maintaining one of the finest yards in the area was a point of pride. His green thumb and meticulous care of his yard were admired by all who passed by. An avid reader, he enjoyed Clancy novels, realistic fiction, and mysteries. He was also a lover of theater, with West Side Story holding a special place in his heart.
Dining out was another of John’s simple joys, particularly at restaurants with crisp white tablecloths that elevated his dining experience. He was especially fond of surf and turf meals and enjoyed frequenting his favorite spot, Bristol’s.
John’s presence will be sorely missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. His commitment to family, friends, and service will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have shared in his life.
A Visitation for John will be held Sunday, October 13, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Alexander-White-Mullen Funeral Home, 11101 Saint Charles Rock Road, St. Ann, MO 63074, followed by a Funeral at 12:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in John's memory may be made to Shriners Hospitals For Children and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
