Maureen was born in Medan, Indonesia on March 15, 1935 to A Toe and Wai Ho Kwan, who have preceded her in death. Maureen married her husband, Beng-Tek Joe, in April of 1966. Shortly thereafter they moved to Germany for a year; then to Canada in 1967; and finally, to the United States in 1975. Maureen and Beng-Tek were blessed with two sons, Vincent & Wilson, and 46 years of marriage before his passing on July 4, 2012.
Maureen was the devoted and proud mother of Vincent (Tracy) Joe and Wilson (Ah Young) Joe; loving grandmother of Lillian and Jillian; and dear sister of Maria (deceased), Siew-Yin (deceased), Ivan Fata, Yaw-Kong (deceased), Mulyahadi, Shirley, and Mike. She is also survived and loved by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family.
Maureen was a strong and supportive partner who helped her husband during his long career as a physician, and was his primary caretaker as he battled Alzheimer’s disease over the last decade of his life. Maureen always placed family first and treasured the time spent with her sons, granddaughters, extended family, and friends. She took the time to reach out to her family regularly and was extremely generous with all whom she knew and loved. Maureen also enjoyed music (playing the piano, watching music competitions, attending musicals), traveling, shopping, and cooking. Maureen will be remembered as a dedicated, intelligent, warm, and caring person. She will truly be missed by all who knew her.
Memorial donations may be made in Maureen’s name to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.
