

Virginia Elizabeth Callas, 92, of St. Louis, MO, passed away from this life on June 26, 2021. She was the beloved wife of Ted Callas for 52 years, who preceded her in death in November of 1999. She was a loving mother to her children Ted M. Callas of Florissant, Cathy deJong of Pacific, and Christina Collins, of St. Ann and dear mother in law to; Toni Callas and Mark Collins; loving grandmother to; Ted M. Callas, Alexandra (& Derrick) Toczylowski, Kristen deJong, and Josh Collins, great grandmother to Trent Toczylowski, Scarlet, and Tommy Callas. She was a kindhearted “Aunt Ginnie” to nieces and nephews, and to many good friends and neighbors in her life time. She was proceeded in death by her much-loved sisters, Elsie Coats and Dorothy Hebenhemier and her many sister and brothers in law. She was known as “grandma” to many that she met that were unrelated to her, especially her dear friend Jim Goers.
Virginia was born in St. Louis on September 25, 1928 to James and Ada Cato, originally of Indiana. She was the youngest of three daughters born to James and Ada. She was close to her family growing up, and even after marrying Ted, the love of her life, she shared their very first house, a duplex, with her father and mother next door. They went on to raise three children in St. Louis and to help care for four grandchildren. Shared hobbies included growing and harvesting vegetables and flowers and traveling around the country to visit relatives and friends or camping in Mo State Parks. Virginia also had a passion for collecting, focusing on rocks, shells, and driftwood picked up on their travels and antiques or other house items in shops while traveling. Ted spent many hours fixing and refinishing many of the furniture collected. Virginia was also a talented writer and wrote many poems to remember different occasions. When free time was available, she could be found reading and always enjoyed a mean game of cards or scrabble. Walking the neighborhood was also a favorite, as was enjoying a sweet treat any time of the day. She always cherished time spent with family and enjoyed going out to eat as long as dessert and coffee could be part of the meal. For the last several years of her life she lived at the Mary Culver Home for Visually impaired women in Kirkwood, a smaller intermediate care facility that turned out to be just right for her. To know Virginia was to love her. She will be greatly missed by family, friends, and neighbors who were lucky to have known her.
There will be a visitation on Thursday, July 1st, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 at Alexander - White -Mullen Funeral Home at 11101 Saint Charles Rock Road, St. Ann, MO 63074 followed by a service and burial at the Mount Lebanon Cemetery on site. Flowers can be sent Wednesday afternoon until 4:30 p.m. or Thursday morning from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. If desired, memorial donations can be made to the Mary Culver Home for Visually Impaired Women at 221 W. Washington Ave., Kirkwood, MO 63122 in Virginia’s name.
