Evelyn Julia Frederick lived a long and beautiful life, rich with family, friendship, tradition, and service to others. Born in Detroit on February 21, 1925, to John and Rose Rostoni, Evelyn was their only child and grew up during the Great Depression. She traveled with her parents throughout northern Michigan, where her father built roads and her mother boarded, fed, and did laundry for the workers. Each winter, they returned to Detroit. Her early education in one-room schoolhouses placed her well ahead of her classmates — a trait that followed her throughout life.
In 1947, she married her sweetheart, Cass, following his return from serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II. They shared 40 years of loving marriage until his passing in 1987.
Together, Evelyn and Cass raised two sons: Don (preceded her in death in 2004, survived by his wife Donna) and Ron (Darlynn). She was the proud grandmother of Brendt (Emily) Frederick, Emilee (Andy) Cavis, Nicole (Joe) Ureel, Lindsey (Jason) Cadreau, and Kyle (Sara) Frederick, and the beloved “GG Fred” to nine great-grandchildren: Parker and Gigi Frederick, Eva and Isla Cavis, Kelsey, Leah, and Madison Ureel, Brady Cadreau, and Emersyn Frederick. Her family was the light of her life, and she loved attending their many events.
Evelyn was surrounded by love — and was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Cass, her son Don, and all of her in-laws and their spouses, with whom she shared lasting bonds. At 94, she bravely battled and survived breast cancer.
Evelyn embraced life with enthusiasm and joy. She and Cass loved to dance — including roller dancing together at the Vanity Ballroom on Jefferson Avenue in Detroit. She loved to bowl, golf, attend her Wednesday movie club, and to travel. But her favorite place was the family cottage, where time on the boat and laughter with loved ones brought her the most joy.
She was a loyal Detroit Tigers fan, watching on TV and attending games year after year. She was also deeply engaged in local politics and proudly supported candidates she believed in — especially Cass and Ron, both of whom served on the St. Clair Shores City Council. For many years, she hosted Monday night dinners before council meetings, creating a treasured family tradition of food, conversation, and connection.
Evelyn had a servant’s heart and a passion for community. She volunteered in local schools and held leadership roles in many organizations, including:
- Charter member and board member of the West Shores Homeowners Association
- Board member of the Lombardi Women’s Society
- Member of the American Legion Auxiliary (Roose-Vanker Post 286)
- Leader within the Catholic Order of Foresters, where she helped launch a children’s summer camp
Even into her later years, she continued giving. She proudly sold T-shirts for Maggie’s Wigs 4 Kids at the Harper Cruise, supported the annual Gala, and never missed the city’s Memorial Day Parade.
Each Christmas, Evelyn delighted in baking and gifting her famous homemade pizzelles — traditional Italian cookies — to neighbors, friends, family, and city staff, including council members and department heads.
In her final years, Evelyn found special comfort in the friendship of her neighbor Amy. Their afternoon chats and shared cups of coffee became an everyday occurrence and source of joy.
In February 2025, Evelyn celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by loved ones. She received special recognitions from friends, family, the City of St. Clair Shores, Macomb County, the State of Michigan, and even Smucker’s.
Evelyn leaves behind a legacy of resilience, compassion, and fierce love for her family and community. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
The family wishes to thank Compassus Hospice for their exceptional care and compassion during Evelyn’s final months.
