

Howard E. Brubaker, 89, of Harrison Township, died peacefully in his sleep, Monday, October 17, 2016, at ShorePointe Nursing Center, St. Clair Shores. He was born in Cross Keys, Pennsylvania to Clarence, Sr. and Ruby (Garner) Brubaker. Mr. Brubaker spent his childhood in Cross Keys and graduated from Hollidaysburg High School. He was offered two full football scholarships, one to the University of Pittsburgh and the other to Iowa State College. He served in the U.S. Army and then attended Iowa State College, graduating in 1950, where he played football for the Cyclones. He married Dorothy L. Wood on October 21, 1949 in Ames, Iowa. After college, he began his career at S.S. Kresge Co. He retired from the Kmart Corporation after 38 years, working in Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania and Michigan. During his career at Kmart, he traveled many times to Europe and Asia as a buyer. He enjoyed spending time with his family, sports, traveling and playing cribbage. He attended 19 Super Bowls and six Dinah Shore Open tournaments. He spent summer vacations at Jessie Lake, Minnesota and winter vacations at Siesta Key, Florida with his family. He and Dorothy traveled to Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean. His family describes him as a man of integrity, honest and kind. He was very giving of his time and had a great sense of humor with hundreds of jokes and tales. He is survived by his children, Victoria (Michael) Buchman of Harrison Township and Kenneth (Carlene) Brubaker of Grosse Pointe Woods; and grandchildren, Brice and Blake Brubaker, along with several in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy; brothers, Clarence, Jr.; Edward, Joseph; and parents, Clarence, Sr. and Ruby Brubaker. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 23, 2016, 4:00 pm from to 8:00 pm at Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores. A funeral service will be held Monday, October 24, 2016, 10:00 am at Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson Avenue, St. Clair Shores. Burial will take place in Resurrection Cemetery, Clinton Township.
