So sorry to find out about Johns passing. We met back in the years when we worked at General Tire, on Gratiot Ave. 
John worked there during the summers of his college years. We became good friends and started hanging out. It was the seventies, and we had some great times. We did a lot of motorcycling, and went to some great parties, knew each other's friends and  
talked about where the future would lead us. He was all around a great friend a great man, a brilliant artist. I was just talking yesterday about his photos of the Hudson building being razed. The one shot tells the story.  To be honest I have missed you my friend all these years. My sincere condolence to his wife and family.

I'm very sorry to here about the passing of Johnny! I remember the time him and Freddy visited my dad and us at our West Branch cabin. He gave me a ride on his motorcycle. My dad Uncle Skip was his Godfather. My condolences go to all the family. Love, Michelle (Belleck) McCulley

Started college at NMU in 1977.  Didn't know a soul.  Schmidty was one of the first people I met when we worked in the Quad 2 cafeteria.    A great guy and talented artist who connected with many people.  He will be sorely missed!

John was a great artist. When I was a kid hanging out with my best friend Paul he showed me his brother’s artwork. Even at a young age I recognized the talent and creativity in his work. I also remembered his kindness as well. 
May God bless him with open arms. My thoughts and prayers for him and his family.

I was blessed to have had John as a good friend for almost 50 years since meeting him while working in the cafeteria at NMU.  I knew I could always depend on him to do whatever he could if I ever needed his help in any way.  He was a hard worker, and was meticulous in doing things the right way.  He had a special way with animals, and would always spoil my dog whenever I brought him to see John.   He took great pride in his gardening, and always wanted to share his harvest, wether it was freshly picked or made as a delicious meal in his kitchen.  while he could get riled up (especially when driving), he had a great sense of humor, and loved playing practical jokes on those he loved.  We'll miss you, John, but I know you"ll be welcomed where you've gone to.

Good memories of Johnny. Always looked forward to hearing his booming voice coming in our side door saying hello to Phil and I and our cat who he called "Girlie". He was helpful and skilled in so many projects for us and Christine over the years.Always kind, had great Christmas parties too! He truly loved his wife, cats, and collecting. Was a good friend to us and we'll miss him.

John, When Arnie and I met him at Jenny's home (his niece) very true, real, sincere, family very important.   Great Artist.

I’m so saddened to hear that John is gone.  One of my closest childhood friends with such a big heart.  John was a unique and in compromising individual. An unusual person he was. A true hippie who lived in the moment. We got seriously stoned in the day at NMU!

From Julie Welker and family, My memory is when our whole family's came over for Christmas at my Uncle Hans and Aunt Lila's house and all of our cousins hung out in the basement and played pool and other games together.
