

Paul Leon Long, age 81 of St. Clair Shores, MI passed away on February 8, 2013 surrounded by his wife and four children. He was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence Patrick and Genevieve (Glavin) Long and seven siblings, Jane, Lawrence, Maggie, Genevieve, Jack, Monica, and Bill.
Paul graduated from Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Grade School and St. Bernard Catholic High School. He married Marie Irene (Demers) on October 11, 1952. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to1954 stationed mostly with the 2nd Armored Division Signal Corp. in West Germany as a telegraph operator in the Headquarters Division of the commanding general. Paul spent most of his professional career in the beverage industry working at Altes Brewery, 7 Up Bottling Company, Coca Cola Bottling Company of Detroit and Stroh Brewery Company.
Paul coached baseball and basketball and played softball for many years. He was an avid Detroit Tiger, Lion, Red Wing, and Michigan State fan. He loved horse racing and in retirement would travel with Irene to Kentucky to watch races at Keeneland Race Track. Win or lose, Paul always enjoyed an afternoon at Hazel Park Race Track. He also enjoyed a good card game, especially euchre or pinochle. He especially enjoyed rooting for his grandchildren’s sports teams. In recent months he loved just having his children and grandchildren for a visit.
Paul is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Irene, his children Steven (Debra) Long of Troy, Paul (Melissa) Long of East Lansing, Christine (Ben) Roeder of Grosse Pointe Park, and Jennifer Armento of St. Clair Shores; grandchildren Christopher (Lisa), Matthew, Patrick, Mary Elizabeth, Catherine, Julia, Madeleine, Alyssa, and A.J.; his sister-in-law Margaret; and brothers-in-law Jerry (Bobby) Demers, Leo (Pat) Demers, and Gilbert (Charlotte) Demers; his nieces, nephews, dear friends, and neighbors.
Visitation at Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson Avenue, St. Clair Shores, Monday, 3-9 p.m. Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, 21120 Benjamin, St. Clair Shores, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Friends may visit beginning at 9:30. A private entombment will be held at a later date at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Capuchin Ministries in Detroit.
