

Richard M. Shoemaker, age 81 passed away March 12, 2021. Beloved husband of Mary for 41 years; loving father of Karen (Don) Abramowicz, Karol Mallon, Kathy (Mike) Daigneau, Michael, Dave (Amy); dear grandfather of Rory, Nick, Jason, Brooke, Jeff, Jennifer, Anna, Christine, and David; proud great grandfather of Braydon, Taylor, Travis and Quinn. Richard is also survived by his brothers Dannie (Pattie) and Timothy (Karen), his former spouse and dear friend Janet, God Child Jill, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by parents Leo and Florence, grandson Jesse, and his sister Sandra and her husband Frank.
“Shoe” was a former Vice President of the International UAW who served three terms. He began working at John Deere in Illinois during high school, where he first joined the UAW. At age 27, he was elected President of UAW Local 865. Dick was appointed to the International Union by former UAW President Walter Reuther. He was elected UAW Vice President in 1995 and served the membership as the lead bargainer for the General Motors and Agriculture Implement sectors of the Union, as well as others. Dick left an indelible mark on UAW members and their families, mentored International Staff, and taught many lessons that will be passed on to his UAW family for years. Dick had a passion for people, for serving, and for helping those who are less fortunate.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 19th, 2021 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm at Kaul Funeral Home, 28433 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores. A private family service will be held at 2:30pm and can be streamed via Zoom, please clink the link to gain access:
