Born October 16th, 1929 in Uherce, near Lwow, present-day Lviv, Ukraine, youngest of five children (brothers Józef and Rudolf, sisters Maryla and Teresa). In the Fall of 1939, as war broke out, the family evacuated to Tarnopol, present day Ternopil, Ukraine. Thence they were deported, exiled to Kazakhstan, to Gyorgievka, near Semipalatinsk with other Poles from Eastern Poland.
When Germany attacked the USSR in 1941, the exiled Poles were liberated and permitted to rejoin the war effort in Britain. The evacuees travelled to the Caspian Sea, transported by boat to Iran. They landed in Ahwaz, Iran. From there to Lebanon, and finally England. Andrzej’s schooling continued during the war; in Lebanon, then in England.
After the war the family settled in London, where Andrzej met Maria in a Polish folk dancing troupe and married August 2nd, 1952 at St Mary’s in London. While growing their wonderful family, he earned his degree in mechanical engineering from Polytechnic institute, in London. In the fall of 1956, the family immigrated to Montreal, where Andrzej began working for a major Canadian telecommunication company.
After an impressive 30-year career with the same company, Andrzej and Maria retired and moved to Prince Edward Island; a piece of paradise where the family gathered and vacationed for the next 26 years.
Survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Maria; their four children, Stefan (Antonia Picciuto), Anna (Jean Pierre Lepage), Monika (Richard Zavergiu) and Marek (Mona Banoub), eight grandchildren; Jennifer (Mathieu Dubus), Michelle (Simon-Pierre Bouchard), Diana, Nicholas, Emma, Kyle, Mason, Lucas and three great-grandchildren; Mila, Arthur, Felix.
A deeply devout Catholic, Andrzej will be missed for his stories and poetry, endless hours of skilled card-playing, the odd game of chess, woodworking, Christmas caroling, his love of Polish folk dancing and most of all, spending time with the family, especially time with the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
May Andrzej find eternal rest and peace in the bosom of His Lord Jesus Christ, as he enters his true home.
Funeral will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church in St. Lambert on August 26, at 2pm. Interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. He will change our lowly body to conform with His glorified body by the power that enables him also to bring all things into subjection to Himself.''
