To my dearest Dennis,

Two years have now passed since the day you left us. My heart still aches when I remember how much you suffered. You bore your pain with such grace and did everything you could to shield me from the severity. Thank you, Dennis, for protecting me till the very end. I wish there was more I could have done to protect and care for you. I’m so sorry for the moments I was tired and in tears. I’m so sorry you had to be so strong for me. You will always be my knight in shining armour; the strongest and bravest person I have ever known.

Today, on this 2nd anniversary, I am  writing to tell you that although you have left an intense void in my life, you have also left me with the most profound and precious lessons. I always think “what would Dennis do or say?” when I find myself having to make a difficult decision. I reflect on your wisdom constantly.
1. Don’t sweat the small stuff
2. Listen to your gut, it always knows
3. Everyone has something positive to contribute
4. Believe in yourself Nurin! You are smarter and stronger than you think!
5. Look for the signs
6. Common sense and manners don’t come from school
7. Not everyone around you was a 90% student. Some people barely got 60%!
8. Take time to smell the flowers 
9. Never have more than 7 thoughts a day 🤪
10. Life is short. LIVE!

Thank you, Dennis, for teaching me.

Thank you, Dennis, for continuing to show yourself to me everyday. I see you. I know you are with me. 4, 44 and 444 are constantly around me. I see the raven watching me or soaring high. I know it is you and I am comforted knowing you are near.

I am doing well Dennis. I am happy again. I didn’t think that would be possible but I believe you and the universe conspired to make that happen for me. 🙏🏼 Thank you.

Morgan continues you thrive. I see so much of you in her. She carries your heart inside her. She is so good Dennis. You would be so proud of her.

Thinking of you always Denny and seeing signs of you everyday 💞 We miss you so. 

My dearest Dennis, Almost four months have passed since we lost you. There isn’t a day that has gone by where the magnitude of loss hasn’t hit me like a ton of bricks. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t need to tell you something or ask for your advice. The pain of losing you is unbearable but I am so thankful that I got an amazing 23 years with you. The good memories have started to come back and sometimes I just start laughing at some of the silly things you used to do. I would do anything to hear you call me Babel again or tell me Nurin Kowalsky (she’s made up) was your favourite Nurin. I’d do anything to ask you to “pick me” or to sing a Billy Bob Happy Birthday to you. I’d do anything feel completely safe again like I did with you but you’re gone. I need to feel safe on my own and believe I can manage without you. I know you would want me to be strong. I haven’t been able to be strong on my own but with the help of Allan, Gary, Lois and Frances, I’m finding my footing. Morgan has been a rock Den, you would be so proud of how well she has supported me, and all our friends have been there every moment of every day to love and support Morgan and me. I want to thank my amazing group of friends and colleagues who have stepped up to lead Morgan and me through the darkest days of our lives. Dennis, your mom has since joined you so I can just imagine how much you’re enjoying your parents attention all to yourself. We miss your mom so much. Two incredible Savard’s gone in such a short time! Heartbreaking. Den, just know that I’m a little better everyday because of the support I have. Thank you my friends and family.  It’s okay now for you to not worry about me anymore. You rest Den. You fought so hard to stay with me and now, almost four months later, I can say thank you for trying Den. You fought valiantly. It’s okay to rest now, knowing I’m supported and loved. Your job is now to be my guardian angel at a distance. I love you Dennis, for always.

My condolences to all of Dennis’s family.  I knew Dennis a very long time ago and he was such a kind and caring man.  I knew him to be full of love for others as well as his fur kids.  He was creative and loved to be outdoors. I remember never knowing if Dennis was going to show up with the yellow Nova, the blue/green Pontiac or his orange Toyota to head out for hours and miles of cross country skiing, a movie or just to head back and work in his workshop or watch TV.  No matter what, Dennis knew how to make the time fun.  His sense of humour was always a joy to be around. I loved watching Dennis in his workshop building whatever he had in his mind and I appreciated that it taught me a lot that I was able to use myself much later.  Whether it was a camping trip or a trip to the cabins by car and skidoo, back then, he always looked out for the people he was with.  It saddens me to see that Dennis left so early from all those that loved him so dearly. Rest in peace Dennis, you will not be forgotten.

So very sorry for your loss. A gentle human who was always willing to help. The world needs more of them. May you find peace in his memory. 

With deepest sympathy Nurin for your loss I was saddened to read in today's Gazette of the passing of Dennis.

  As a fellow maintenance worker at RVR,  I wish I had the words to articulate what a value his abilities and humanity were to the school environment and to each of us who worked there.

  I especially appreciated his help when I was down for the count after a work accident. He came to my house and cut my lawn and and drove my wife to see me.

  It brought tears to my eyes thinking of all the memories from work, setting up grad night, ice storm frozen pipes, water floods etc. Many many things were done he was always there to handle such situations.

I am so sorry for your loss.
I remember Dennis as a warm, caring member of the RVR community. With a smile and a kind word he always helped others .
He will be remembered fondly by those who knew him.

I’ll never ever forget Dennis and Tom stepping in for one of our children’s friends mother to do things like put up the tempo. Tom told me Dennis told him we are like her brothers helping out wherever we can. Ok yes Nurin and I asked Dennis and Tom but they did it with a smile, losing a Saturday afternoon spent helping out others. When I totally trashed my van, Nurin and Dennis offered their car so we could drive Emma and TJ to camp.  Dennis driving with his pick up down Walnut then Regent to find me and TJ and our bikes.
There are a lot of stories like that. That was Dennis (and Nurin) just quietly helping you out when you needed it most. 
I’ll miss you, Dennis. You are one of the good ones ❤️

Nurin, I am so sorry for your loss. You and Morgan are in my thoughts. 

My brother Dennis was always there for me no matter what was going on.  When he saw this picture he wanted it.  Unfortunately, it was not mine to give.  
I believe Dennis would be happy to know that I am including it as a very special memory.
Dennis rolled with the punches all his life including when he was not well.  I learnt a lot from that.

My favourite memory of Dennis is of one hot summer afternoon when I went to visit Nurin and the three of us sat on their deck, shaded by beautiful trees. 
Dennis always made me feel so welcome in their home and was a wonderful host. We chatted easily and laughed often.  It was a difficult time in my own life and I appreciated the kind words and gentle wisdom that he shared.

I've meet Dennis just a few times, everytime he was helping out. He donated his time numerous times to build structures or wooden supports for FAF students' artwork on weekends and to help set up and take down vernissage just to name a few. Dennis will always be remembered in my heart. A kind and generous soul who cared for his loved ones deeply. “ Only a person who has lived totally, can die gracefully” a quote by Sadhguru best describes Dennis to me. Dearest Nurin, 
I have only had the pleasure to meet Dennis once, but from what you have always told me, he was a strong, loving, caring husband and a true fighter.   No one can ever replace the amazing person that he was. 

I cannot fully express the sorrow I feel for you at this time. I am thinking about you always and am just a call away.

The last two years have been so difficult but your love for Den shone through at every step of the journey.  You have shown remarkable courage and strength in dealing with this cruel blow.


Den was truly a good man - always kind, generous and funny.  He handled his illness with such grace and quiet acceptance.  He taught me and helped me so much and I am grateful I got to be his friend.  I will miss Den's smile, his laugh and the many stories he shared - around a campfire or your kitchen table on Montgomery. I will look for him in nature and I know I will see him!

Uncle Dennis  - I still can’t believe you’re gone. I keep hearing your laugh, and can’t wrap my mind around the thought of never hearing it again.  I will never forget the camping trip you took me on when I was a kid, and each night, after everyone turned in, you and I stayed up by the fire and just talked and talked for hours, about everything and anything.
