After meeting Seshagiri in England, the couple immigrated to Montreal in 1965, where Shaila immediately attracted many new friends who would form a lifetime extended family. People gravitated to her because of her compassion, empathy and generosity; she lent a willing ear and was ready to help everyone. Later, she applied these traits as one of the co-founders of the Cercle des Femmes du Quebec d’Origine Indienne, a community group for South Asian Women.
Shaila was the heart of her family and a one-woman call center for the Indian community in Montreal. It was noteworthy that a child who overcame the loss of her parents became mother, sister and trusted confidante to the many who depended on her. Her smile, humility and grace will be missed by all who knew her and while she has departed this earth, her spirit will live on in the minds and hearts of those she touched.
She is survived and will be forever missed by her sons Sitaram (Monika) and Hemant (Brenda), grandchildren Zoë and Max, brother Anand (the late Georgina), and many nieces and nephews in Canada, India, the U.S. and the U.K.
A memorial service will be held at a later date when we can gather safely.
In the interim, messages and memories can be left at the website of Collins Clarke MacGillvray White.
