I met Debra in 1991, when I began my long career at WashU, and she remained an important constant in the office and in my life. Debra always wore a warm smile. She was always willing to help whoever stopped by her desk. Debra amused us with her funny sayings: “God willing and the creek don’t rise!” for example, or: “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him put on a bikini!”  I think the latter she inherited from Bob Morrell. Debra never liked to take center stage.  Even when we celebrated her at one of our year-end parties, she preferred to remain on the sidelines. Ever modest, always dependable, my years at WashU were richer for having had the privilege of working with Debra. She is deeply missed.

Debra and I were best friends since the 1st grade at Thornhill Elementary school in Frankfort, Ky. We loved each other as sisters from other mothers. In our talks and correspondence with each other she was Debra Sue and I was Debra Jean! We shared good times and bad times with one another. I am sorry to say that recently we had not been in touch. I will always love her and know that she is now looking over me from a much better place. My love and prayers go out to Krishnah, Christopher and all the family.

Dear Krishnah and Christopher,  I am so very sorry to hear about Debra's passing.  She was a warm,  kind and loving person who brightened the world for everyone around her.  At Union Avenue Christian Chuch she was always updating us with stories about Christopher's antics and updates - she was so proud of you.  We will all miss her very much. Debra and Krystel, May 2013. I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Debra. She was a kind, supportive, and fun colleague, and I truly enjoyed working with her. I remember how she always had cute sayings such as 'IIWII: It Is What It Is.' She was always 'tapping her toes' to get work done. My heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.

We much regret that we are unable to be with you today. Debra meant a great deal to us, and we are deeply saddened by her passing. Debra did so much on behalf of everyone she worked with at WashU. She was invariably cheerful and selfless in her desire to be of service to faculty, students, and anyone who came by the office with a question or a request. She was one of a kind. Debra Jones was a dear, dear soul. May she rest in peace.

Debra surrounded by her East Asian Languages and Cultures department family at her retirement party in December 2018.  Debra helped keep everything running smoothly with care and dedication. She was generous with her time, deeply resourceful, and always supportive. She took care of everything with great care and order, and she was kind-hearted and always ready to help whenever we had questions. Faculty cherish her memory.

I miss u so much!! I will always be ur kika wika woo woo woo! I know ur here in spirit and u ride in my heart!!! Please team up with Jesus and protect my family and keep them going in the right direction . let them know that they are blessed to have each other!!! My prayers now include that we will be together in the afterlife and although I miss u I’m so thankful that ur now in peace!! I luv u!!!!!!!
