Dorothy Mae Hill, age 100, of St. Louis, Missouri passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2022. Dorothy was born July 21, 1921 to William and Mildred (Outman) Norris who, along with 6 brothers, preceded her in death. Dorothy was married 40 years to her husband, Maurice Hill, who passed in 1987.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Gregory (Missy) Hill, Richard (Patsy) Hill, Carolyn (Kathy Rohrbach) Hill, Thomas Hill, Bradley (Stephanie) Hill and Brian (Debbie) Hill. She loved being a grandmother and her 8 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren affectionately knew her as Gam.
Dorothy, known for her quick wit and extraordinary intellect (skipped a grade in school) was raised in DeSoto, MO and went to work in St. Louis immediately after high school, taking a train from DeSoto daily until the family moved to St. Louis. She excelled in all she did. At 45 she went to Meramec Community College and became a freelance reporter and worked until she was 75 years old.
Dorothy dedicated her life to her family, including her mother, siblings, aunts, cousins, as well as her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She and Maury were active in church throughout their marriage and made sure their children were provided a thorough opportunity to learn about God and our Savior Jesus Christ.
Dorothy and Maury sought the best for their children and ensured that each of their six children attended and graduated from college. She was very loving but also firm. She often had to raise the children without her husband who was away on military duty.
Sadly, Dorothy suffered from dementia the last ten years of her life. She did her best to continue to be independent.
A visitation for Dorothy will be held Thursday, February 24, 2022, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Hoffmeister South County Chapel, 1515 Lemay Ferry Road, St. Louis, Missouri. A funeral service follows the visitation at the same location.
