

Loving husband of the late Edna J. Schaller (nee Holderbach); beloved father of Mary L. Lopinot and Jeanne (Joseph) Smith; dearest grandfather of Christopher and Julie Smith; dear brother of the late Robert C. (survived by Alvira "Vi" ) Schaller; our dear brother-in-law,uncle, cousin and friend to many.
Gene served his country heroically during World War II as a Master Sergeant in the 743rd Ordinance LM Co Headquarters Section of the 43rd Army Infantry Division in charge of all munitions and disposal in the South Pacific Arena. After his discharge in 1945, he attended Saint Louis University and entered the Real Estate, Insurance and Investment business.
Gene was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War and the 43rd Infantry Division Veterans Association – New England and Sunbelt Chapters. He was a realtor for over 60 years and belonged to the St. Louis Association of Realtors, RESA, Missouri Association of Realtors and Real Estate Board of Metropolitan St. Louis. He was also an active participant in community organizations including the Carondelet Historical Society, Carondelet Area Programs, Carondelet Community Corporation, Carondelet Community Betterment Federation, South Broadway Merchants’ Association, Carondelet Days Picnic and Parade and even opening his office to Free Pictures with Santa for over 27 years.
Gene volunteered his time to teach evening school for years at Blow School where he was still an active Board Member of the Carondelet Blow Community Education Center. He also was an original sponsor of the COE program for Mehlville and Oakville High Schools.
Gene was a well – respected and much – loved member of his community who was never too busy to help any organization or individual in need of his assistance.
Funeral from Hoffmeister South County Chapel, 1515 Lemay Ferry Road on Tues., Nov. 29, 2011 at 9:15 AM to St. Stephen Protomartyr Catholic Church for Funeral Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00 AM. Interment with full military honors will follow in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
