Martin was a legal lion. I have never seen his better in 29 years of practice. The things he said to me, brilliant and insightful, I use everyday in my own law practice.

He lives on in all of our memories, and he will be missed.

I met Martin Green 30 years ago when he was seeking a position on the appellate judicial commission. He invited my dad and me to lunch at the St. Louis Club. My dad Ed Dowd and Martin exchanged stories from the 50s 60s 70s and 80’s. He had a truly phenomenal memory. He was a kind, gentle, intelligent, funny and insightful gentleman.  I loved Martin.

As Debbie’s youngest child—you have always been like a grandpa to me and my siblings. The picture added is one of my most favorite memories. 

Marty  was a dear friend of 50 years who always had time to speak to me ,also my friends , his Mom and Father, raised Martin in a great manner, Jack  Mathews of Jack Mathews Chevrolet introduced me to me to Martin and that friendship  continued until Martin passed away. Martin handled my purchased from Jack Mathews Chevrolet, June of 1984 and he was always there for me along with Debbie, what a pair, they were the greatest.  
Martin will be missed by all of his friends and clients whom he has taken care of over the years, and one of dearest friends , his sheep dog whom Martin loved with all of his heart.

I was sad to learn of Martin's passing. Martin was a great attorney and a true gentleman. There was none better. Martin proved that you could be a zealous advocate and a respectful and courteous  opponent at the same time.  I will remember his smile and his laugh as we reminisced about trials and personalities of the past.  It was an honor to have known Martin.

Martin and my father, James R. Dowd, were best friends for many years and Martin became part of our family. On most nights of any given week, they debated law and politics, worked out at the Clayton Center, and played with my Dad's dogs, Mochi and Rocky, whom Martin loved very much. We were always delighted to see Martin pull down our driveway because we knew he would be sharing interesting insights and laughing with us moments later. 

Martin always had a great story to tell, but he was an amazing listener, too. Martin was curious about the world and about the people in his life. When I was in high school, college, and law school, Martin truly engaged with me and he wanted to hear about my studies and experiences. Martin always remembered the details of what we discussed during the previous visit--as Joe mentioned in his condolence message--Martin's memory was very impressive! 

The photo I've included here is from Martin and my Dad's birthday party that I planned in June 2017. We went to Citizen Kane's Steak House with our family and friends and we laughed all evening! 

While I wish we could see Martin pulling down our driveway one more time, I will always value the time we spent together. May his memory be a blessing.

Martin was generally regarded for decades as the finest trial lawyer in Missouri. He earned that recognition, but he was so much more. He was charming, handsome, athletic, funny. Martin was the best law partner one could have. Not only was he a brilliant lawyer, he was also a great person. He was kind, loyal, and generous, not only to all of us who worked with him, but to our kids and families as well.

We got to know Martin so well, working long hours together, hearing his stories about his parents and his family, and his war stories, chatting with Martin's friends as they came to our offices, sometimes to socialize, sometimes to have their problems solved. 

Martin had a fabulous memory and could remember tiny details from decades past. This client, he told me once, Martin had met before he started elementary school when the man was a boy of four, hanging upside on a swing and crying. Martin did not need a phone book. He had the phone number of every lawyer in town memorized. When Martin needed a case for a brief, he just walked to the shelf, pulled out the right volume out of the hundreds of volumes on the shelf, and turned to the right page, all faster than I could find the case on the computer. Martin was awesome.

Law was Martin's life, the thing he loved most, and he worked hard at it all of the time because he was doing what he wanted to do and what he was great at. He lived the life he wanted and it was a good life. I will always treasure the years we worked together.
