Thank you, Miss Markus -- I am so grateful to have had you as my 5th grade teacher!

As some others have posted, Miss Marcus was a favorite at Busch. She was my 7th grade homeroom teacher and English teacher. At our 30 year reunion at Busch, Miss Marcus was part of the memories we shared, so many good memories and smiles. Her life is evidence of how one person can impact generations. It's my priviledge to have known her. I'll see her in heaven again one day. God bless her family. I'll pray for you during this difficult time.

I had the pleasure of having Mary as my 7th grade English teacher at Busch Elementary School in St. Louis in the late 1970's.  She was always one of my favorite teachers.  A large group of my classmates and I recently gathered for a reunion and "Ms. Markus" was the topic of many discussions and fond rememberances.  In fact, news of her passing has made it's way to FaceBook and has generated a lot of commentary from the group.  She was a lovely woman and will be missed by many.

We recently had a class reunion for the Busch School class of 1980.  There were so many wonderful memories shared of Miss Markus.  She was a true inspiration to students and a warm and wonderful person!

I was fortunate to have Miss Markus as a teacher twice (5th & 7th grades) and she had a huge impact on my life. I thought of her so frequently during the last 40 years. When I was in 5th grade a metal bookend  fell off her desk and broke - I took it home to see if my Dad could fix it for her. He couldn't - she didn't want it back - I could never part with it because it reminded me of her. Years later, when my partner and I were house hunting we walked into a house and a set of the bookends (a little boy & girl) were on the bookshelf. I had never seen another set like it - I felt as though Miss Markus was there looking after me.  We bought the house, I found someone who could fix the bookend and it sits on a shelf in my living room. I think of her everyday when I see it. She had a great influence on my life. I wish I had known she was still alive. I would have loved to thank her for being such a great teacher and tell her that I grew up to be an educator too. When I recently got together with other people who went to Busch School in the 1970s we agreed that she was our favorite teacher - aside from being a great teacher she was lots of fun to be around. We all enjoyed remembering her standing on one foot at the lectern - sitting at a desk dangling her high heel on her foot - reading novels with brown paper wrappers. Her memory is very dear to me. I always wished I had known more about her life.

I only met Mary once but talked with her a few times on the phone when she lived in Webster.  Such a sweet lady - she seemed almost too fragile for this world.  I'm sure that she's now enjoying a wonderful Coyle family reunion with much singing and laughter!  God speed, Mary!

In memory of my Busch grade school teacher. Thank you for being a blessing in my life.

Miss Markus was my 6th grade English teacher @ Busch Middle School. We recently had our 30 year, 8th Grade Reunion and we all remembered her with such fondness. We loved to talk about her at the podium with her leg swinging and her shoe half off. She was a wonderful teacher and we will carry her in our hearts forever. May God Bless her family during this difficult time.

My Dad, Anthony J. Coyle, named me after Mary Magdalen Markus.  My Dad entered WWI in April 1917 when Mary Magdalen was 2 years old.  He was 1 of 11 men from his company that came back alive, and he credited that to the prayers that Aunt Mamie and little Mary Magdalen said nightly for him during the war.  She was so very much loved by everyone that knew her, and I got to know her better more recently.  My brother Jim Coyle and I took Mary and Pat to lunch and stayed in contact with them by phone.  Mary's mind was as sharp as a tack, and I will miss very much our interesting and intelligent conversations.  My condolences to Pat, Adlene, Don & Family, and the extended Markus Family.  There is nothing in this world like Family.

What a sweet, soft spoken, well educated and endearing person! She made life a joy.  Just being around her inspired you to become a better person. Her life as a Nun and teacher gave her such a wonderful understanding of people and increased her God given ability as a peace maker. We thank God for allowing us to know her.
