Beloved husband of Colleen (nee McCormick) Wakus; loving father of Kathy and Nicole; dear brother of Ann Wise, Helen Smith and Betty Barciszewski; dear cousin, uncle, and friend.
Born in Madison, IL to Nicholas, Sr. and Mary (nee Zieba) Wakus, Nicholas was an avid sports fan and an enthusiastic athlete, winning several gold and silver medals in the Senior Olympics for basketball & golf. His ability to shine under pressure and rise to the occasion led to him being mistaken for a professional at both bowling alleys and pool halls. He enjoyed playing basketball at the JCCA and coaching at St. Richard Parish. He loved to sing and had an ear for music, picking up piano and drums like a natural. He served his country as an MP in the US Army, stationed in Paris, France from 1953-1954 during the Korean Conflict. After finishing his duty to country, he went on to Granite City Steel (National Steel) where he was a sales representative from 1955 until 1993.
