

Norma Anne Schmidtlein, fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, died peacefully at home on October 11, 2022. She was born on November 30, 1960 to Eugene and Mary (Holland) Schmidtlein. She attended St. Mary’s Special School and St. Joseph’s Vocational School in St. Louis, Missouri.
Norma worked at the sheltered workshop, CMSE, in Columbia, Missouri for 37 years before moving to St. Louis to live with her sister, Mary Schmidtlein Rhodes. Norma participated in Special Olympics in many sports, but excelled at swimming and golf, winning over 180 medals. She participated in the Special Olympics World Games at Yale University in 1995, winning a gold and silver medal in swimming.
Norma’s favorite day of the year was her birthday which always included lasagna, garlic bread and carrot cake. She had an uncanny ability to remember the birthdays of all she knew. Norma lived a full and meaningful life thanks to the love and devotion of her parents, family and friends. She taught us about love and life.
Norma is survived by her father, sisters Mary Rhodes (James) and Rachel Puschel (William) and nephews and nieces, Matthew (Kate), Andrew, John and Mary Clare Rhodes and Will and Anna Puschel. She was preceded in death by her mother.
Visitation Saturday, October 15, 2022 Noon – 12:45 pm followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at Immacolata Church, 8900 Clayton Road, St. Louis, Missouri 63117. Interment at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville, IL. In lieu of flowers, Masses preferred. Memorials to Immacolata Parish and School.
