

Born on June 27, 1948, in Fairbury, Nebraska, he was a man of many accomplishments and passions.
A graduate of Peru State College, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education in 1970, Roger began his career as an educator, imparting knowledge in mechanical and architectural drafting, woodworking, metalworking, and welding at Plattsmouth High School in Nebraska.
In May of 1972, Roger was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve, marking the beginning of a distinguished military career. He completed Naval flight training in 1974 at Naval Air Station Whiting Field, Florida, becoming one of the first two Naval Aviators to receive their designations at the new home of Navy rotary wing aviation. His transition to the Coast Guard in 1976, while on exchange duty with the Coast Guard at Air Station Los Angeles, CA, ushered in the start of a remarkable journey.
Throughout his service, Roger undertook various assignments, demonstrating exceptional leadership and dedication. Notably, he served as the very first Commanding Officer of Integrated Support command St. Louis since its establishment in 1996. His contributions were invaluable, shaping the unit’s operations and fostering a culture of excellence. His commitment to duty earned him accolades, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, the Coast Guard Achievement Medal (3 awards) with Operational distinguishing device and the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation with Operational distinguishing device. He eventually retired from service in 1999.
Beyond his professional achievements, Roger was a devoted family man. He leaves behind his beloved wife of almost 29 years, Gail Tucker Evans, as well as his two daughters Amy (Buddy) Henley, and Lora (Rich) Clements, three granddaughters Willa, Adeline and Violet, and his brother Frank (Pat) Evans. Roger is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Stella Evans, sister Pauline (Mike) Rumery, and wife Cheryl Belding Evans.
He leaves behind a vast and loving family, and many friends, who will continue to honor his memory with love and affection.
Roger had a zest for life and a passion for woodworking, carpentry, and restoring his 1957 Chevy. He was known for his boisterous laugh, larger-than-life personality, and his faith in God, which echoed his vibrant spirit.

Roger’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him. His legacy of integrity, kindness, and dedication shall carry on. May he rest in peace, knowing that his life was a testament to the values he held dear.
