Coach Autieri was such a well respected member of the PMHS athletic department for so many years.  I never saw him without a broad smile on his face and would always greet any student by their name.  I will always recall that he would often call upon me in junior high gym class to demonstrate some type of gymnastic move which I was totally unqualified to do. I think it was his way to give those of us,  that were definitely not athletically inclined, a sense of confidence. I truly believe that my association with Coach Autieri during my high school years made me a better person.  My deepest condolences to his entire family.

A wonderful guy; a terrific role model; an inspiration to the boys he mentored.  We were lucky to have Augie as our coach.  He introduced me once as possibly the 'hardest runner in the county;" then made me into a tackle because I kept fumbling the ball.  He brought out the best in all of us.  He is respected and loved; he is missed.

Anybody that knew my relationship to the Autieri family knows that he was like a second father to me as his son augie was like my brother. He often thought of me as his third son. I considered him one of the greatest men i've ever known. Take care MISTER A. We've lost a great man. My sympathy to Augie, John and Jana.

A wonderful guy and true legend in my hometown, Pelham, NY 10803...I knew him as a cigar-chewing football coach and gym teacher who encouraged me and supported me in everything I attempted and accomplished at Pelham Memorial High School...My sincere condolences to the entire Auteri Family.

As Coach Autieri's first Quaterback (1954), I can only thank him
for his wonderful way of handling and encouraging young men.
His influence on my career as a Naval Aviator & Airline Pilot is forever remembered.

Mr Autieri was a fixture in Pelham. Such fond memories... He had so many titles after his name including drivers ed teacher.  Thank you for taking care of all of us. You were very special and well remembered. My deepest sympathy to the family of Mr Autieri.

As I thought about Augie today naturally the three seasons (1962, 1963 and 1964) and many of the games came to mind. I certainly spent quite a bit of time with him at Parkway Field but my most fond memory is not of him as a coach but as a gym teacher at Hutchinson School. In particular there was one incident where I and some other 10 year old friend (whose name I have forgotten) were using some quite salty language which Augie became aware of.  I distinctly recall how he quietly but firmly pointed out that this was not something which would not be tolerated.  It made quite an impression on me at the time and I often thought about it when I had to deal with the same stuff when my son was about that age.  He was definitely a role model for me in that regard (and not a bad football coach either).

Augie Autieri was both larger than life and down to earth, Larger than life because he was THE COACH, and had a way of seeing something in you that you didn't know was there, and getting you to play at your best, always, 100%

Down to earth because he was always approachable, always encouraging, and very easy to talk to. He was tough on the field, but calm and deliberate when practice or a game finished. He knew we all loved him...and I did....but, he'd be embarrassed to admit but, but really pleased to know it....We gave him a tribute dinner in 1984, which he originally wanted no part of, but relented because the whole idea came from "my boys"

He had a way of motivating us before important games (like, Harrison in 1966, which we won 6-0, and thereby claimed the SWIAC Championship) That season was unbelievable...everyone should be blessed to play on a championship team once in their lives, and that was ours...well, mine at least.....

So, for all the guys who were fortunate enough to play for Augie (and I apologize, because you're not all there): Ellis, Larry, Roger, TK, Giustino, Slowy, Biggs, Bootsie, Tyrone, AJ, Querns, Shark, Vinny T, Kach, Rusty, The Little Pig, Rella Rella Rella, Gabby Take a Lap, Kenny P, Trip, Crash, Gronk, Gerorge and of course The Rave...I think we all might admit that one of the proudest things we can say is:

"I played football for Augie Autieri"

Mr. Autieri was not only my gym teacher at Hutchinson School from 1st through 6th grade, but was also my driver's ed instructor when I turned 16. (Mr. Autieri certainly had nerves of steel and lots of patience with the novice drivers in our group!)  He will be remembered warmly by all of us who knew him as a teacher and/or coach. My sincere condolences to his family.

Augie, retired in 1983, was a kind man, good teacher, colleague and friend to many in the Pelham Community. I coached when he was Athletic Director and he was always supportive of the students and coaches. Rest in Peace.

Mick and I send our prayers and sympathy to Augie's family.  He was a very special and good man, who lived a life that made a great impact on many!  Rest in peace, Augie!

Augie Autieri was both larger than life and down to earth

Larger than life to all of us who played football for Pelham Memorial HS in the mid-60s...in my case 1963-1966 seasons. Coach was the MAN at the top of the program...and we all looked up to him

Down to earth because he was always approachable, loved his players, as we all loved him...and I loved him for who he was, and what he meant....he'd be embarrassed, but pleased I think to hear it....and know it was true, from me and all the great players I played with....

He could see things and talent in you that you didn't know you had, and through his ability, raise you up to believe in yourself, and play to the best you had, because....you didn't want to let him down

The 1965 6-0-1 season was unbelievable...everyone should play on a championship season once in their lives, and that was mine...and a LOT of the motivation to go at Harrison (with Ralph Fridgen playing, you know who I'm talking about) came from coach...tough games at both Sleepy (tie) and home at Harrison (win!) but enough to get there

So for me, and I'm sure for (long list) Ellis, Roger, Larry, DeMar, TK, Giustino, Slowy, Rusty, The Little Pig, Rella Rella Rella, Biggs, Bootsie, Shark, Guerns, Kach, Gabby Take a Lap, The Rave, Tranny, Elio, Larry, Lenny and I'm sure many others I'm forgetting....one of the proudest things we can ever say about ourselves is:

"I played football for Augie Autieri"

Augie was a teacher, a mentor, a friend, a counselor and an inspiration to all who had the privilege to know him and especially to those who had the opportunity to play for him.  The world is better for his presence, as are all whose lives he touched. Truly his was a life well lived. Condolences to the family and thanks, as well;  thanks for sharing this great man with us all.

I am saddened to hear about Coach Autieri's passing. I was proud to be a captain of his 1972 Football team. Coach A always treated me with repeat and dignity. My thoughts are with his family.

I'm very sorry to hear about the passing of your dad. My dad, Robert Heelan (who passed away in October), always spoke very highly of his friend, Augie Auteri. I can believe now that a great football game is going on in heaven! My condolences to all the family.
