Stanley I Anderberg

Stanley Ivar Anderberg, 70, St. Pete Beach, FL died peacefully on June 27, 2022 in the home that he loved. Stan was born December 7, 1951 in Davenport, Iowa to Ivar and Gretchen (Groff) Anderberg. The blonde-haired boy who could do no wrong grew up in Moline, Illinois, graduating from Moline High School in 1969. He went on to graduate from Black Hawk College and then Western Illinois University with a degree in Education. While Stan never taught school as his formal profession, his love of learning persisted throughout his life. Following college, Stan worked for Deere Harvester Works in East Moline.

While in college, a trip to Germany would introduce him to his two great loves, travel and his future husband, James Cobin. For their first 15 years together, Stan and Jim made a loving home together in Rock Island, IL.

After losing his factory job during the farm implement crisis of the 1980s, Stan returned to college at Western Illinois University to earn a degree in respiratory therapy. He and Jim relocated to St. Pete Beach, FL in 1987, where they found paradise along Boca Ciega Bay. They traded their love of the Chicago Cubs for unwavering, season-ticket-holding loyalty to the Tampa Bay Rays. Stan worked at Bay Pines VA Hospital for 26 years, retiring in 2013. To celebrate his retirement, Stan and Jim embarked on a two-and-a-half-month cruise around South America. In all, their travel adventures together took them to 25 countries outside the U.S. After more than 40 years together, Stan and Jim’s devotion to each other was made legal when finally married on May 5, 2015.

Following his husband’s passing in 2017, Stan continued their shared loves of travel and baseball games. He also picked back up his grade school cornet and became a proud member of the Gulfport Gecko Amalgamated Marching Band and the Greater St. Petersburg Area Second Time Arounders Marching Band. A highlight of his time with the Rounders was marching in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in 2019. Stan also volunteered for Florida SHINE (Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders) and enjoyed his civic duty as an election poll worker.

Stan was preceded in death by his husband, parents, a brother, and a niece. Left to cherish many memories, along with his dear friends, are his sister, Bona (Mark) Hilton, stepsons Randy Caswell and Scott (Beth) Caswell and a niece with whom he shared a special bond, Wendy (Jay) Hilton-Morrow.

A Celebration of life service will be held Wednesday, July 6, 11 a.m., at Memorial Beach Chapel, St. Pete Beach, FL.

Those who wish to follow in Stan’s model of generous giving are encouraged to donate to a charity of their choice. Two charities meaningful to Stan and his family are the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Research and the Human Rights Campaign.
