

Bernice graduated from Dulles High School in Stafford, and was involved in the marching band and school newspaper.
As a young woman she worked as a secretary and met her husband, John Upton. When her son, Johnny became ill, she cared for him and her family full time. After her husband John’s death, she studied real estate and was a realtor/property manager for many years. Later in life, for about 15 years, she worked at the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office.
Bernice met husband, Charles Barclay, participating in grassroots politics in her community. Together they built a life around their children and grandchildren, and enjoyed woodworking, crafting, and home improvement. Bernice enjoyed bowling and was involved in the Houston Women’s Bowling Association for many years. She loved Polka music and dancing, and she had many friends and dance partners.
She is preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Julianna Syzdek, her husband John Upton (m.1966-1986), and Charles Barclay (m.1992-2004), her son John Upton, her brothers Ben, Bobby, and Paul Syzdek, and her sister Louise Janczak.
She is survived by brothers AJ and Sam Syzdek, as well as children, Catherine Upton, Jennifer Upton, and son-in-law Monty Macon. Also, her grandaughters Faith and Abigail Borak, and her stepchildren and step-grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend Bernice’s visitation and funeral.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, on June 26 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the chapel at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 27 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home, 12555 South Kirkwood Road in Stafford.
Interment to follow at 12:30 p.m. at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Road in Houston.
Following the interment, a celebration of life reception will be held at Townewest Towne Hall at 10322 Old Towne Ln, Sugarland, TX, 77498 from 1:30-3:30 PM.
