

She was born on September 24, 1924 in Eagle Lake, Texas. She was the youngest daughter of William C. and Sophia Wilson Elkins. She attended public school in Eagle Lake where she graduated from high school. She then attended Houston Business College. She married Julian Cox on July 8, 1944 in Houston, TX. Their oldest son, Gary was born in June 1945 followed by another son, Tim in June 1953.
Dorothy was always interested in her family history. Her love of genealogy prompted her to write a book on the Montgomery & Thatcher families which was published in 1992. Through her ancestors she was able to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Daughters of the War of 1812, Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT), and United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC). She was the organizing President of the Fort Settlement Chapter of DRT from 1989 - 1991. She served on the board of the Fort Bend County Museum Association and served as Vice Chairman of Fort Bend County Historical Commission. She was also an avid doll collector.
She was a member of Sugar Land Methodist Church. She attended regularly until she was unable but then thoroughly enjoyed her weekly visits from the home care ministry.
She loved life and her heritage and was a vibrant lady who loved and admired all her family, and oh so very proud of what she had accomplished in life. Most of all, this great Texas lady loved her state, her country and her God. They were precious to her!
She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Cox. She leaves behind her 2 devoted sons, Gary and his wife LaQuita; and Tim; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; her sister, Ruth Orr; numerous nieces and nephews; her special caregivers, Brenda and Dorothy ; and many friends.
A memorial service was held on July 2, 2015 at Sugar Land Methodist Church with Rev. Phil Grose presiding. A graveside service will be held for close friends and family on July 25th at Morton Cemetery in Richmond, TX.
