The bright shining light and life of Elizabeth H. Mitchell, 85, was put out on November 2, 2022. Elizabeth was born to Mary Slama and Frank Havel Hruby on March 24, 1937, in Baytown, Texas. She was a former member of the St. Michael’s Wedding Guild and former Tea Room Patron of the Junior League of Houston.
She attended elementary and middle school in Baytown and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. She was a member of the Lee Brigadiers Drum & Bugle Corp. She also attended Lee college. She took piano lessons in her elementary school years, but especially loved her ballet and tap lessons, some of which she still performed at home in her older years. She also kept in touch with her friends from Baytown over the years.
As a young woman, Liz and some of her girlfriends from Baytown decided to come to Houston. She worked downtown at what was then Tennessee Gas Pipeline. She met one of her dearest and lifelong friends, Dolly Debes, while working there. They were always in touch, even when their children were born and grown.
Always a vivacious and vibrant personality, it was at an engagement party for one of her friends that she met the love of her life, Lee Edwin “Mitch” Mitchell, from Weslaco, Texas. They were married for 60 years until Mitch’s passing in January 2018.
Liz and Mitch moved to Bellaire, where they raised their two children, Debbie and Scott. They loved to attend their children and grandchildren’s sporting events over the years. Liz was a team mom for the “Cubs” when Mitch coached the Bellaire Little League team to a Regional Championship. She was a Camp Fire Girls Mother driving her daughter and friends to Camp Winiwaca. She also enjoyed family vacations to Estes Park, Colorado, and weekend trips to Lakeway, Austin, Texas. She loved her Houston Astros!
Not too soon after moving to Bellaire, they bought a home across the street from Condit Elementary School. When her daughter, Debbie, and son, Scott, were in 4th and 1st grades, she took a job in the school office. She worked in the Condit office under 4 principals for 30 years, starting as an office clerk then promoted to school secretary. She loved people and especially helping the parents, students and teachers with any questions they had, always with a smile.
After her children and granddaughter were grown, Liz and Mitch sold their Bellaire home of 50 years and moved to Del Web Sweetgrass in Richmond, Texas. Mom was a member of the Garden Club, Daytrippers and Lunch Bunch and continued to attend various Veteran’s Club events after Mitch’s passing. Liz and Mitch very much enjoyed the Del Web community and each of their wonderful and caring neighbors.
Elizabeth is preceded in death by her cherished husband, Mitch, her parents, Mary and Frank Hruby, her brother, Frank Hruby and grandchildren, David Scott Mitchell and Katy Mitchell.
Those left to mourn her loss are her daughter, Debra M. Bosse, of Richmond, TX, her son, Scott and his wife Amy of Amarillo, TX, and her beloved grandchildren, Brittany Bosse, Jacob Mitchell, Beau Mitchell and Maggie Mitchell.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the caring and compassionate nurses and doctors of both the Special Care Unit in the Alkek Building and ICU in the Fondren Building of Houston Methodist Hospital.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 9 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the chapel at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home, 12555 South Kirkwood Road in Stafford.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, November 10 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Road in Houston, where Fr. Wayne Wilkerson is to officiate.
The interment will be held on Monday, November 14 at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery in Houston.
