Evelyn A. Helgeson Kliem was born November 25, 1934 at home in Bejou, Minnesota to parents Albert and Ella Helgeson. She died peacefully in her home with family surrounding her on March 2, 2023 at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Effie, and brothers Victor, Sander, Millard, Lester, and Arthur. Survived by husband Herbert, daughter Cynthia, son Aaron, daughter-in-law Denise, and brothers Walter and Omar.
Evelyn was a dedicated daughter that took care of her siblings, father, and physically handicapped mother. After graduating high school and her mother passing she moved from the farm to Minneapolis and stayed with her sister. She got a job as a clerk in a bank and made friends' with a young lady who's husband was in the Navy. They decided to visit her friend's husband by taking a long bus ride to Long Beach, California. Evelyn loved Long Beach and decided to stay. She got a job in a cafeteria and eventually became a hostess. She then met her future husband in 1956 and married Herb August 1, 1958. On July 2, 1959 their daughter Cynthia was born. Her husband was in the Navy so the first of many moves started December 1960 to Corpus Christi, Texas where their son Aaron was born September 29, 1961. From there they moved to Mayport, Florida 1962, Norfolk, Virginia 1964, Great Lakes, Illinois 1969, Virginia Beach, Virginia, 1973, and finally Houston, Texas 1974. Evelyn lived the rest of her life in Houston with her loving husband Herb celebrating their 64th anniversary August 2022.
Evelyn was very artistic and crafty. In her 20s and 30s she loved sketching, drawing, embroidery, and sewing clothes for her and her kids. Once both children were in school, 1967, she volunteered as a nurse's assistant at their school. She loved to make flower arrangements and decorating the house. In her 40s she learned ceramics and made many things for the house and gifts. She loved to bowl and sometimes was on several teams at the same time. She was such an excellent housekeeper that some of her friends called her Mrs. Clean instead of Kliem. When her husband retired she went back to work in an office part-time as an office clerk for about a year. As a homemaker she never got to retire but did continue to decorate and loved to shop which kept her young by walking the mall. She loved reading and read a lot of autobiographies.
She was loved deeply and will be greatly missed.
Thanks to all the family and friends sending their wishes and prayers.
