I was a teacher at HSHP. As one of the class sponsors of the HSHP Class of 1997, it was my pleasure to interact with the students for all 4 years of their time at the high school. Jose was such a kind and gentle soul. He always made me laugh. Especially when I was stressed out with something to do with class activities, Jose, Chris Martinez and David Chapa would do something to make me laugh and ease my stress. (In actuality, I think they just wanted me to stop being so serious, but it worked as a stress reliever often times as well.)  I located 2 pictures of Jose from that time and thought I would share them.  On the left Jose is presenting Dr. DeBakey with the drawing he created that later hung in the entryway of the school. On the right, he is being crowned Prom King in 1997.

Es un recuerdo memorable con José Pérez, en uno de los eventos de voluntarios de Baker Ripley. Cada día que llegaba a nuestro centro de impuestos ( Aldine library) nos ayudaba a preparar las declaraciones al igual que nosotros y no por ser el director se sentía superior a nosotros.  Nos deja un enorme vacío difícil de entender. Su humildad y sencillez siempre lo caracterizó. Jose was voted most beautiful every year in high school, but he was even more beautiful inside. His incredible artistic talent always gave us the best designs for class t-shirts and a wonderful portrait of Dr. DeBakey for our high school. Summer of ‘94 I had a hardship license and before we started getting jobs the following year, we’d have a blast in the afternoons with friends at Celebration Station, the movies, AstroWorld and Malibu race track. Looking back at pics, I remembered the Lock In freshman year where the high school let the kids stay up all night having fun in the cafeteria & gym. In the morning when we were waiting to get picked up, he was so tired & I was throwing potato chip crumbs at him to get him to wake up & someone took a pic of Jose sleeping while covered in chips. One of the pics senior year was of a bunch of girls, but Jose & Chris photobombed it, before it became popular like today. Even though they were trying to be nonchalant in the background, you can see Jose cracking up that we were clueless they were going to be in the picture and we wouldn’t know it until you had the film developed back then.  I remember going to Magic Island, a restaurant that included up close magicians before your dinner and then a big magic show. Maybe we weren’t calculating the required valet fee, tax, & tip when we planned to go, because we were short of the total, but Jose must have used some charm because they let all of us leave without even cleaning any dishes lol. I have so many fond memories from years of practices for cinco de Mayo program dances and spirit team performances, fundraising for a Childrens foundation with his dads company,  multiple quinces, to foam pit dancing in Cancun. It was a joy to see him with his family at the reunion and I see so much of him in his beautiful children. He will be remembered ALWAYS. 

Joselito I still can’t believe your gone. You were a kind , sweet soul, I remember walking into Flores sandwich shop on Lawndale  and you were probably a student at UofH and working there part time and you greeted me with your beautiful smile. 
My deepest condolences to your wife Cindy and your children. And to Olga and Antonio and your sisters, you were loved by your cousins and friends and now your their Angel, you can watch over your loved ones. Rest In Peace 🙏🏼❤️😢

Recuerdo a José calmando con mucho amor y mucha paciencia a mi hija Cindy, el estuvo con ella cada segundo en el nacimiento de mis nietos Ixchel y Beni, desde ese momento el se ganó un lugar en mi corazón, y cuando vi su amor y su paciencia para enseñar y educar a mis nietos, también se ganó mi admiración, José fue el mejor padre que Dios pudo mandar para Ixchel y Beni, y el compañero perfecto para mi hija, seguro que Dios lo necesito en el cielo, por eso se fue sin despedirse, le pido a Dios que lo deje venir y entrar en los sueños de mis nietos para que les de un besito y les asegure que todo va a estar bien, que abrace a mi hija y la consuele, y que siempre esté cerca de ella para protegerla y cuidarla 

Mr. Perez was an AMAZING dad. I taught both Benicio and Ixchel for Kindergarten.  Anytime I needed supplies or help on a field trip he was the first parent to volunteer and help. One funny memory- We went on a field trip to Crocodile Encounters. We were learning about lemurs and were told not to cross the line because they were territorial. Mr. Perez was a bit of a daredevil and crossed the line to get the best picture possible. The lemur came so quick and popped his hand and cellphone. No injuries, but I cried tears of laughter. Sending love to the Perez family.  I’ve never had a parent so thoughtful and caring. Love, Ms. Craig

The energy Jose put into the world was truly one of a kind. To simply say he will be greatly missed doesn’t do the deep void he leaves behind in every soul he ever touched justice. We were all so blessed to have known him. 

He was amazing and he loved me and my sister so much. I'm really gonna miss him.

My favorite memory with Tio Jose were the nights he would read me, Ixchel and Benni books before bed. But there where times we would both just go in the kitchen and eat together and just talk. Talk about life and how it’s going. I felt like a daughter to him. I miss him but I know he’s looking at us smiling. I love and miss you Tio Jose-Love Amalia

I remember seeing Joselito  And giving him a hug.. And he says nooo, I'm not Joselito..I'm now  Josélote... He made us all laugh out loud with that day.. I will miss that beautiful smile.. May you rest in eternal peace.. Let the perpetual light shine upon you forever. ✝️🙏💔

I remember being in calculus class in 1997 and Jose had a cold. He sang this song that I believe he made up and I still sing it everytime I get sick. "I got mocos in my nose." ( sang to the tune of He's Got The Whole World in his Hands)
