Mary departed her earthly life to begin her heavenly journey on Thursday, May 9, 2024 with her family by her side.
Mary graduated from Gary Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana. She continued her education in Indiana and Texas to receive several degrees, which included Criminal Justice, Associate in Arts, Management Supervisor, Medical Staff Services, and Business-Technology/Information Word Processing Operator.
Mary moved to Texas with Ralph Smith in the early 80’s and they later married on March 7, 1984.
Mary retired from the IRS and even after retiring she was a business owner of HELP ME HELP YOU Food Pantry, and Smith & Smith Physician Billing & Consultants.
Mary was committed to serving her community. She was a Commissioner for the City of Stafford. Her involvement in community food drives and the annual Christmas Toy Give Away, which she and her husband Mr. Ralph Smith generously funded, was just the beginning. Mrs. Smith's commitment extended to several civic organizations, including the SMSD Long Range Planning Committee, SMSD Bond Committee, SMSD Community Center Operations Committee, the City of Stafford Planning and Zoning Committee, and SMSD Administration Construction Committee. Mary was also a block captain for the Neighborhood Watch, and a community activist for neighborhood news.
Her affiliations included Phi-Beta Lambda-Alumni, Phi-Theta Kappa-Alumni, and National Association of Notary Public.
Mary is preceded in death by her mother, Margarite Brooks, her sisters, Barbra Jean Brooks Thrower, Samantha Pace, and Joretha Franks, and her brother, James Brooks. Mary leaves behind her loving husband, Ralph Smith Sr., her children, Felicia (Antonio) Harris, Janet Wright, and David (Carlotta) Burton III, and her sister Mary Gibson. Six grandchildren, Jazmine, Antonio Jr. (Destiny), Antionette, Jewel, Devon, and Deanna and four great-grandchildren, Aedan, A’Niyah, Ayala and Antonio III., and a host of other nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 17 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the chapel at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home, 12555 South Kirkwood Road in Stafford immediately, followed by a Celebration of Mary Ann's Life at 1:00 p.m.
Immediately following, the service all are invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Mary Ann during a repast dinner to be held at 2:30 p.m. in the event room at Earthman Southwest Funeral Home.
