Michael Edward Connolly, 73, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2021. Mike was born July 28, 1947. A native Houstonian, Mike graduated from St. Thomas High School and then he attended Rice University, where he received a Bachelor of Science and Masters degree in Electrical Engineering. Mike then began his career at Houston Lighting & Power Company, which later became CenterPoint Energy. Mike was a respected and well-known expert at performing complex computer simulations to plan and operate electric power systems. Among his many accomplishments, he led the Company’s efforts to simulate, analyze, and plan for the successful integration of thousands of megawatts of new generating capacity in the greater Houston area after the power industry transitioned to a new market structure in 2002. Throughout Mike’s career, he mentored countless numbers of engineers, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to this day.
One of Mike’s many passions was spelunking (cave exploring). It was on one of his spelunking adventures that he met the love of his life, Theresa. Mike and Theresa were married 46 years and had three daughters: Christina Squires, Katherine Baker, and Kimberly Connolly. Along with his wife and daughters, Mike is survived by his sister Patti Connolly; son-in-law, Mark Squires; Grandsons Christopher Squires, Seth Squires, Stephen Baker, and Gregory Baker; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Besides spelunking, Mike also enjoyed traveling, geocaching, and driving jeep trails in Utah, all with Theresa at his side. He also had a great love for trains, from model trains to riding Amtrak trains. Along with Theresa, Mike was an avid bowler. In his life, Mike bowled two perfect (300) games and, with his bowling partner, won a USBC national mixed tournament doubles title.
Mike had a rich, full life and was deeply loved by his family and the many friends he and Theresa made along the way. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Mike’s memory to the American Heart Association.
