

Author and historian Albert Z. Conner Jr. 72, of Stafford passed away at his home on Friday May 20, 2016. Conner graduated from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) with a bachelor’s degree in history in 1966. He received his master’s degree in government from Georgetown University in 1981. He served for 30 years in the federal service -- consisting of 12 years in the regular army in the infantry and military intelligence branches; and 18 years with the Defense Intelligence Agency (including a 12-year detail with the Central Intelligence Agency). His military experience included two combat tours in Vietnam.
Mr. Conner is a former president of the Stafford Historical Society and Fredericksburg Civil War Roundtable, advisory board member of the Adams ’71 Center for Military History and Strategic Analysis at VMI, and former volunteer at Chatham, NPS.
Mr. Conner is preceded in death by his parents and wife Cheryl.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jane Conner, his sons; Marshall Conner (wife Wendy), Owen Conner ( wife Adele), Gavin Conner (wife KC) and Doug Henderson, along with a daughter, Michelle Porter (husband Michael), six grandchildren, Hannah and Drew Porter, Liam, Christina, Alice and Henson Conner.
A memorial service will be held at 3pm on Saturday June 4, 2016 at the Summit Presbyterian Church 256 Shelton Shop Rd. Stafford.
In lieu of flowers the family asked that expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to either Summit Presbyterian Church or “Not for Fame or Reward” VMI Scholarship. Make checks payable to the VMI Foundation at Box 932, Lexington, VA 24450 noting memory of Mr. Conner.
Burial will be private at Quantico National Cemetery.
