Science Club Photo (2018)

     As a member, then eventually President, I remember Mr. Crawford possessed a blend of playful-witty sarcasm and would sometimes roll his eyes and chuckle whenever we made silly jokes. But, underneath that demeanor there was a warm affection felt by his students and club members.   
     He fostered a friendly atmosphere in his classroom, creating a sense of safety, leaving room for humor even while he's teaching us a cool science topic.
In my experience, when students nickname teachers, it's often out of comfort, familiarity, and admiration. It may seem silly, but I believe it's true. In the case of the past science club members, 'Crawdog' sounded the coolest. So, it is with sadness that I write:
Rest in Peace, Mr. Crawdog. I've worn and will continue to wear Hawaiian shirts on (some) Thursdays to continue your fashionable tradition.

- To Mrs. Crawford, I hope you are doing well and you have my earnest condolences. Mr. Crawford was very lucky to have a kind and gentle partner who gave thoughtful compliments and whose voice not only educated, but brought a soothing presence that made learning feel peaceful and encouraging.

My condolences to Mr. Crawford’s family and wife Mrs. Crawford. I was a student of his in 2017, he was an amazing science teacher, made me enjoy and appreciate his class and the way he taught. Mr. and Mrs. Crawford were both my teachers in highschool and gave me good memories of school! I will never forget his way of teaching and jokes. May he rest in peace.

I was a student at North Stafford over a decade ago and still tell stories about “the cool teacher at my high school who did Tae Kwon Do demonstrations”. Mr. Crawford taught me and several of my siblings, and I remember him so clearly as one of the most iconic and beloved teachers at school. I arrived at North to substitute teach today and learned of his passing. I am spending the day thinking about what an amazing man and educator he was. I hope you all know that he touched every single corner of this school during his time as a teacher here and was so deeply loved and respected by the student body. He taught me how to nurture and care for others (any my fish) and was never without something funny to say. I can only dream to one day have the impact that he had as a teacher. He will be cherished, remembered, and missed.

Master Crawford has made a difference in so many lives. I’m grateful to have had him as a part of my family’s life.  Rest in Peace Master Crawford.

Dan and I first crossed paths when I was a baby teacher, just 25 and teaching summer school for my first (and only) time. 

Flash forward and we were earth science colleagues at NSHS, working across the hall from each other for most of my years there. It's hard to imagine a time that he and I haven't worked together, even if looking back, the years were fewer than I realized.

Dan and I connected because we both loved science and found joy in sharing it with others. We both loved sci-fi and admired classics. Working alongside someone who knew what to take seriously (and it was never ourselves) is one of the best things a teacher can find.

And this was one of his superpowers - always finding delight and playfulness. I'll never forget his toe-bouncing excitement after getting to pet "big cats." As his health started to decline, I saw his frustration of not being able to explore as much of Shenandoah as he wanted to while we were there for a summer PD. 

I know that finding the love of his life gave him a level of joy that he had always hoped for, and I am honored to have been part of the Crawford wedding party. 

Dan's other superpower was having zero patience for bullies and people with big egos. While he never shied from a disagreement, his deepest ire was saved for those who picked on others. 

Dan was authentic in ways that were easy to respect and admire, and I never had an argument with him that wasn't resolved after a meal (or beer). 

I'll miss you, friend.

So sorry to hear about this. I taught alongside Dan at KING GEORGE, and always looked up to this guy for good advice and a good laught. You will be missed Master DAN.

Dearest Crawford family,
I'm so very sorry for your loss. I'd known Dan for about 12 years working with him in the No. Stafford science dept.  I worked across the hall from him for the first few years I taught. Does it surprise you to know that I always had to shut my door because he and Ryan were SO loud?  ;)  Then my classroom moved next to Meghan, my mentor.  Dan would occasionally come to me for snacks when his blood sugar was low.....and I would enjoy saying anything that would make his eyes roll.  We enjoyed the same taste in music, sadly only attending one Journey concert together.  Dan, you will be missed.  Crawford family, know that I will be thinking of and praying for you in the coming months.

Mostest Crawford,

You are going to be missed. I loved chatting with you after school about our students.  Your dry wit and sarcasm made the difficult days a little bit lighter.  You will always be "The Most Crawford."

Dan was like a brother to me. We would have fun conversations and I love hearing his stories with sarcasm and wit. I would tease him by calling him Daniel and he would tease me by calling me Katherine.  He often asked if he could get a new set of legs and I would tell him they were on backorder. When he told me that his legs were finally starting to feeling better, I told him that I was glad that backorder finally came through for him. The last time I saw Dan was in November and I am glad I saw him and was able to chat for a bit. I will miss Dan. He was really a cool dude to talk to and joke with and that's what made him a great friend.

Dan and I were partners in the Freshmen Academy.  We shared the same configuration of students, and we quickly became what felt like family.  Dan and I sometimes conspired when dressing up for Spirit Week–he was  Clark Kent (with Superman busting out), and I was Lois Lane. Another year, we dressed up as our interpretation of each other. That one was pretty comical.    I helped “chaperone” a field trip in the woods outside NSHS with our students, and it was heartwarming to see  him with the kids, sharing his love for science and nature. 
 I will always remember Dan for his  dry and often sarcastic sense of humor, and when I think of him, I think of laughter. But there was another side of Dan too, and that makes me smile. Dan was a tough cookie full of a lot of love. I can still see the look of pure love and happiness on Dan’s face on his wedding day.
 Dan, “Dr. Garrison” misses you already, and Meghan , I’m  sending you my love.

I really got to know Dan working together in the Freshmen Academy at North. He loved his “kids” and would light up talking to them about science, fish,  Star Wars, comics or anything else. He sure would make us laugh with that sarcastic sense of humor. He walked through a lot with me and his friendship never wavered. I’ll always remember singing our special short Birthday Song (it wasn’t very long). I’m going to miss you, Dan!

With a very heavy heart I am writing my most heartfelt condolences. My heart is with you, I love you very much.

Dan was one of the first people who I connected with when I first started teaching at North. I foundly remember a Saturday afternoon game of flag football and getting to know him outside of school for the first time. His frank, poignant, and often hillarious observations were a joy and something only he could come up with. I'm so sad to hear of his passing and I wish the best for all of his loved ones.

Dan was grumpy, sure, but also funny and generous.  He must have rolled his eyes HARD when I walked in as a long-term substitute with no science background. Yet he answered every question, shared his resources, tips, and tricks, and was among the first to encourage me to get certified in ES.  I was thrilled when he invited me to accompany the Oceanography class to the Virginia Beach Aquarium.  He was in his element, answering questions from the kids, walking around with a little smile as they excitedly pointed out stuff he had taught them! But my favorite memories of Dan will always be moments in conversations or discussions-- even when working on common assessments or PD-- when Meghan would be mentioned. The smile of pure delight on his face when he said "my wife" or "my Meghan" was so joyful.  It was wondrous to see.
