It is  Memorial Day. The cheers have stopped, the people have left the stands and softball is a thing of the past.  Every Friday and Saturday from 1993 to 2002, I took the field with POP Softball (Prince of Peace United Methodist Church/Manassas, Va) with Doug Herbert.  Almost 5 years after he died, my mind stills dwells. Doug,  I remember when you saw me at a heavy weight. You did not want me to play out of risk of my health (it was 300 pounds) but you said nothing in 2006 (Note: I played later that day on another team and saw what Doug saw and promptly retired) So many from that team are gone, Stan the dentist, Tim Lake, Mark Meade (way too young) and others. Doug was the example of working  around softball. Anything to get to that day, and the days after the fact spent at L/B Pizzeria. Sometimes 3 hours after a game was done.  I can only say that even though this holiday is  for our military fallen, this is for ALL who went by their own desire and fire for others in pursuit of their inner peace and contentment.  Doug, I know you were saved. And you have eternity. Thank you for coming to my Mom's service.  And yes for being a father figure as well.  James Caldwell Dotson

I have many fond memories of Doug and consider myself very fortunate to be able to spend a little time with him a few days before he passed.  I'll never forget the good times we had playing baseball and softball. Thoughts and prayers to your family.

Doug and I played a lot of ball together thru our High School years into our mid 30's playing softball and had a team that had six Herberts in the starting line up and another Uncle from the Halcombe side. We had lost touch once our families started but saw each other at family cookouts and other funerals thru the years. It's just too bad he couldn't have gotten a long life like his Dad Boozer. I will miss ya buddy........
