Sharon (Sheri)Sue Hatch (Phillips),77, died 19 May 2026 at Walter Reed Hospital, Bethesda, Maryland. She was born in Oil City, Pennsylvania on 24 December 1948. Sharon was a resident of Northern Virginia. Sheri had a very giving nature.
Sharon Hatch was preceded in death by her parents 1SG Marshal George Phillips and Marian Ethel (Heffern) Phillips, and her sister Judy Rogers who helped Sheri through challenging times with being a military family and through Sheri’s own personal challenges. Sharon was also preceded by a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She graduated from Oil City High School in 1966 and later earned a BA degree from Strayer University.
Sheri worked many jobs throughout her life. Even during a varied federal government career working primarily in security disciplines for the federal government, she began her 30-plus year federal career with the Army Research Institute. Other organizations included the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence (Army G-2) where she met her husband.
Probably her favorite period was her time in the Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection directorate in the Pentagon Force Protection Agency. After successfully completed training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center she was credentialed and authorized to carry a weapon. Sheri enjoyed the humor of being reported as a “little old lady” carrying a weapon in the pentagon. When Sheri retired, she was the Security Manager for Joint Base Meyer and Henderson Hall where her devotion and attention to detail could and did at times “ruffle feathers”.
Sheri was a very giving person who was always ready to offer a hug, advice or support, if asked. Part of Sheri’s giving nature may have been derived her earlier experience while working with the residents of a Pennsylvania residential facility who had various “special needs.” She loved cooking, gardening, quilt making, sewing, knitting and crocheting. She was constantly in here sewing room haven creating things with a wide range of themes or sharing her knowledge with those who asked for help. Shawn loved the hockey and global themed items. Sheri was continuously making holiday themed items to decorate the house, such as pillows and guilts.
She also made quilts and pillows for her husband to use for a more comfortable research trip. Sheri loved going on adventures, small or large. She traveled to South America multiple times with Mark and Shawn. She enjoyed traveling in the United States with her husband using the quilts she made and the “that looks interesting” stops.
She found a great deal of enjoyment attending Shawn’s hockey games, as well as, watching the Capitals Hockey games. Watching her husband decorate cakes fascinated her.
Sharon is survived by her husband, Mark, who she met at the Army G-2. While helping a co-worker with a school fund raising drive, Sheri walked up to Mark, told him he was buying cookie dough. After his selection, she told him she expected cookies. Thus began their courtship that included a wedding and 24 years of marriage. When telling the cookie dough story Sheri would also end with “Not only did I get the cookies but also the love of my life.”
Sharon is also survived by her daughter, Sandra Hatch; her son, Shawn Hatch; her five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind a loving sister-in-law, Thelma and multiple cousins and friends that will dearly miss Sheri.
Visitation is on the 6th of June 2026 between the hours of 3 to 5 PM at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, located 186 Shelton Shop Rd, Stafford, VA, 22554. Sheri requested no funeral service be held.
Sheri requested that instead of flowers that in her memory donate something that will last longer than flowers Such as:
--support a local charity of your choice where you can more easily see how the donations are used.
--make Gideon bible donation.
--make a tree donation that are often offered through funeral services, park services, and youth organizations.
