Nicki - I am just hearing about the passing of your sweet Tyler. I am so sorry for your loss. I wish you and your family peace and comfort.

As Tyler’s school nurse at Forge, I was witness to his quiet strength and determination on a daily basis. He was such an inspiration to all who met him!  My heartfelt sympathy to his family.  Filippa Unger

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend Tyler’s services, so I wanted to leave my memories here. 

I knew Tyler when I worked as the Administrative Assistant at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. I would greet him as he passed by my desk with his crew to sign in, or see him when he took a break in the Docent Room, and sometimes we would chat a little. 

I always admired the way he consistently volunteered in a very public position, as a Hospitality Ambassador posted to the front doors where people come into the Museum. Tyler didn’t let his disability stop him. He chose to live his life, and I really respected that! 

At the time, my husband was transitioning from a working life as an ambulatory below the knee single amputee to one in medical retirement as a multiple amputee, primarily lived in a wheelchair. Tyler inspired and reminded me that a full life in a wheelchair was possible. You just had to be ambitious and have good people around to help you figure out a plan. 

Tyler could have easily chosen to stay home and play video games and found a way to use his wheelchair as an excuse to get out of school requirements or dealing with strangers. (Lots of people his age, able bodied or no, would have done that.) Instead, Tyler embraced what life offered him, even though it contained different choices and looked different than other people’s. It was still a full life that contributed to society. 

I was deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I will miss not seeing Tyler by the front desk when next I visit the Museum!

I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I cared for Tyler and witnessed the incredible love and support your family gave him every single day. It was clear how much he was cherished and how deeply you all were there for him. Caring for him was an honor, and I will always treasure the time we shared. Please know I am holding all of you in my thoughts and prayers and sending you love and comfort during this difficult time.

Nicki and Family—I loved what you wrote about Tyler.  What a real treasure and I can tell he was the most loved kid ever.  I just wanted to let you know a bunch of us from NHS heard about it at the same time, and we are all thinking about you and your family, and the St. Mike’s crew are keeping you all in our prayers.  If only they could send selfies from heaven—the reunion must’ve been amazing for Joe and Tyler.   I’m sure Joe was there to receive him and those two guys have a lot of catching up to do.

Dear Matt, Nicole, Madison, and family,

Although I never had the opportunity to meet Tyler in person, I still remember a conversation with Matt about twelve years ago when we were asked to name our heroes.  Without hesitation, Matt said his son, Tyler was his hero.

After seeing the memories and stories everyone has shared, it's clear why.

From everything shared about Tyler, it’s clear that he was a remarkable young man whose joy, kindness, and vibrant spirit touched everyone who knew him. His love for his favorite teams, his passion for learning and sharing what fascinated him, and his generous heart are a beautiful testament to a life lived with courage and gratitude. Tyler’s strength, positivity, and enthusiasm are truly inspiring.

Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I hope you find comfort in the many wonderful memories you shared and in knowing how deeply Tyler was loved.

I remember Tyler as a Webelos Scout in Cub Scout Pack 907 over a decade ago.  As my oldest son began his scouting journey, it was inspiring to see Tyler doing his best to participate in so many of scouting's activities despite the challenges he faced in life.

He inspired me to learn more about how to deliver the scouting program to youth with special needs.  Now, as a dad of a special needs scout, my youngest son, I look back on that time in Pack 907 and have Tyler to thank for providing a reason to learn more.  I'm definitely a better scout leader and dad because of it.

May he rest in peace.

Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to meet Tyler, however, I do have the memory of you telling me about him in Miss Darling‘s second grade classroom. I remember the joy in your eyes and the love in your heart as you told me about your sweet boy and I can remember how much joy he  gave you and I am sure how much joy you gave him.  Your family was blessed to have him, but also he was blessed to have you until you see him again it’s so good to know he’s with Jesus and I look forward to meeting him there in heaven.

I’m so very sorry for the family. I am a friend of Shelly and know a lot about Tyler. God Bless him and you’re family.

I don’t have a photo or video. Back when we lived close to the Fry family, photos still were taken on film and video players were too expensive for us Triangle dwellers. 
Tyler is the same age as my youngest son and we lived across the street from Matt and Nicki’s.
Tyler and Dylan used to play together in the sand box. They both loved cars and tractors and dump trucks. Dylan absolutely loved his time playing with Tyler the 5 years we lived close together. Wonderful memories of joy and happiness during that time. I love you Fry family! Bless you all!

To The Fry Family, I will always be thankful for getting a chance to meet Tyler. He was the sharpest dressed young man in the room and his hat was dapper. I was so honored to meet him because I was able to see his beautiful smile in person. A memory I will hold dear. I will pray each day for your family. I'm so sorry.

Here are some of Tyler’s favorite stuffed animals that he has had since he was a kid. He did not care if it was the middle of summer, the holiday babies were coming out! We have a huge bin in the basement of extra stuffed animals that Tyler always made me (Maddie) pull out so we could rotate them so they were all getting all the love!!

Tyler always loved going to the store. He did not get to go all the time because a trip that would take 15 minutes would take over an hour because he loved to browse and get a bunch of stuff we didn’t need haha. Within the last few years Tyler became interested in a YouTuber, Mr. Beast, Tyler had always insisted he did not like chocolate (which my parents and I knew wasn’t really true) ((he has always been a stubborn cutie)). Mr. Beast created a chocolate bar and said he needed to try it!! We bought a bunch of different flavors and he tried them all. He ended up enjoying majority of the flavors!

This was a Halloween gift he got from someone recently. As mentioned, he loved his stuffed animals!

We were not able to do family vacations as much as Tyler got older, however, we used to go to Myrtle Beach every summer for a gymnastics camp for myself and make a vacation out of it. One year, we had just got to the place we were staying and Tyler and I saw a kids splash zone/waterpark. It was this plastic frog slide and you got to slide down the tongue. Tyler and I kept saying “please, please can we go down the slide” and our parents kept saying that it was going to be freezing. Tyler and I didn’t think we would care and kept asking until our dad finally said “fine, you can do it”. We both went down and froze our butts off!! We learned that day that mom and dad MIGHT know a thing or two. However, me and Tyler never stopped being stubborn to them lol.
