Adair Leovy Hatchl died peacefully on November 29th at Greenwich Hospital at the age of 87. The youngest of three daughters, Adair was born on February 19, 1935 to George and Florence Leovy, in Lima, Peru, where her father worked in shipping and port development. The young Leovy family moved to the United States when Adair was 6 years old. They settled in Riverside and then in Old Greenwich, CT locations that perpetuated generations of family lore, awe and appreciation for life connected to a tidal coastline.
Adair attended Greenwich public schools, the Greenwich Academy, the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, New York and then on to Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, MA.
Following graduation from Pine Manor College in 1955, Adair went on to live in Manhattan with close childhood friends while working in advertising. It was in New York that she met Wilson. Wilson and Adair wedded in 1965 and were married for 53 years. They moved to Rowayton, Connecticut in 1969 where they raised their children, and ensconced themselves in community life. Early on, Adair was an active member of the Junior League where she was a lead for the River Project, a hands-on program that used the Five Miler River as a site for teaching 4th graders about the River’s ecosystems and cycles. At different times, Adair served on the Board of the Rowayton Library, on the Board, and as President, of the Rowayton Arts Center, and on the St. Luke’s Altar Guild. She wove herself into her children’s activities as a class room mother, an active member of the Rowayton School PTA, a Girl Scout Leader and as a member of the BMHS Football Booster Club - especially as a steadfast helper at night-before game dinners.
All who knew Adair enjoyed and cherished her grace, gentleness, commitment to service, thoughtful kindness, sense of humor, optimistic outlook and appreciation of aesthetics. She led her family to understand the profound power of love, which will live in their hearts always and forever.
Adair loved and adored her family. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Wilson Hatchl and her sisters, Lucy Davenport and Martha Cullison. She is survived by her daughter, Tina Elizabeth H. Greco (Christopher), her son, John Hatchl (Marcela) and her grandchildren Sophia and Matthew Greco, Alicia Hatchl and Samuel and Valentina Roman; her nieces and nephews; George, Mariana, Katharine, Bennet and Alan.
Friends are invited to a memorial and celebration of Adair’s life planned for July 22, 2023 (details will be posted on the Leo P. Gallagher website). At a private Committal at St. Luke’s Church in Darien, in December, Adair’s ashes were laid next to Wilson’s.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to St. Luke’s Church in Darien, Rowayton Arts Center or Rowayton Library. The family would like to thank the special nurses and doctors that were part of the palliative care team at Greenwich Hospital.
