

James (“Jimmy”) Albert Scanlon of Stamford, died at home on January 11, 2011, after a brief illness, surrounded by his family. Born in Stamford, CT on January 30, 1929, he was the son of the late Asa W. Scanlon and Mary Elizabeth McGuire. A resident of Stamford his entire life, he graduated Stamford High School in 1946 and immediately entered the Army of the United States on June 18, 1946. Jimmy was deployed by the Army to Italy in 1946, where he was assigned as a Military Policeman with the 88th Infantry (“Blue Devils”) Division Command Post. Jimmy was later relocated to Trieste, Italy when his unit moved to that location. This is where Jimmy met Linda Caterina Canziani, his future wife. They were married October 20, 1948 in Trieste. Jimmy served in the Traffic Element of the 88th Division Military Police and in Trieste with the 281st TRUST Military Police Company. In these assignments he was responsible for Traffic Control in Northern Italy. He remained in Italy until he returned to the United States with his new wife on June 2, 1949. Jimmy was a superior soldier and his service was distinguished in all respects. Jimmy was a plumber by trade and was a member of Local 777 United Association of Journeymen & Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry for over 60 years. He was also an active member of the local VFW and of The American Legion, Post #0069, Arlington, Vermont. He enjoyed deer hunting in Vermont and Canada with his father and friends. He also loved his home, it’s surrounding natural beauty, wildlife and birds. His favorite pastimes included gardening and strolling his property with his dog, Nikki. Jimmy is survived by his daughter, Vivian, and his siblings Asa, Mrs. Kathleen Uva, Robert and Richard, including many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Linda, his sister, Mrs. Ida Mae DeLeo, and brother, Jack. Calling hours will be held Thursday, January 13, 2011 from 3:00pm until 7:00pm at Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 2900 Summer Street, Stamford, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, January 14, 2011 at 10:00am at Church of Holy Spirit, 403 Scofieldtown Road, Stamford, CT. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, 25 Camp Avenue, Darien, CT.
