Gail is survived by her sons, Darren Malloy Hekking and Shaun Egan Hekking (Alex Plaut Hekking), daughter-in-law Kim Mader Hekking (Francis X. Fitzgerald), and her beloved grandchildren Kiera, Connor, Landon, and Brady Hekking.
Gail was the eldest of eight children and only daughter of William F. Malloy and Agnes V. Egan. She leaves behind her brothers and their wives; William F. (Evon D.), Ronald E. (Sandra C.), Kevin J. (Linda M.), Brien E. (Christina M.), Kerry J. ( Patricia S.) Shaun M. ( Johnnie C.), Former Governor of Connecticut Dannel P. Malloy (Catherine L.). Gail also had 27 nieces and nephews and dozens of great-nieces and nephews. Gail also grew up with a very large number of first cousins from the Malloy, Crawford, Costello and Egan families.
Gail was raised in Stamford, graduated from Stamford High School, attended Stamford Hospital School of Nursing, and later decided to take a different direction to become a flight attendant for TWA airlines based in New York City. This is where her love for people and travel blossomed and where she met the father of her sons and former husband the late Laurie V. Hekking.
During her life Gail was very fortunate to have had lots of great adventures! Living in London as a young mother with her sons and later living in Bratislava, Slovakia. Gail resided in Slovakia just after the fall of the Soviet Union and witnessed great cities return to life. Gail worked to form an International Women's Club and went on to become the President of the organization, maintaining many of these relationships throughout her life.
At the time of her death, she and her son Darren Malloy Hekking were partners of The Malloy Group at Douglas Elliman Real Estate in Greenwich, CT. They both truly loved working with one another. A multi-award winning Realtor, Gail's passion for her clients, wealth of knowledge, and local expertise made her for decades one of the most sought after Real Estate advisors in Fairfield County.
Gail was a proud Stamford native and participated and supported countless political and local charitable organizations throughout her life. Gail was on the Board of the Friends of Ferguson Library and Chaired the Novel Affair Committee for five years, and was also a citizen advisor to the Ferguson Library Board. In 2017, Gail was honored by the Ferguson Library for her work in chairing the Novel Affair Fundraiser.
In addition to the Ferguson Library, Gail was on the board of ARI (Always Reaching Independence) in Stamford for many years. She was a member of the Friends of the DSSD (Downtown Special Services District). As a member of the Stamford Rotary, she served on the board as its New Member Chair since 2017. Gail assisted with the annual Dictionary Project, providing free dictionaries to Stamford's third graders, helping with various clothing drives and winter jacket collections, and at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic led an effort that raised thousands of dollars for the Stamford Food Bank.
Gail's happy place was certainly the Bartlett Arboretum. An avid gardener throughout her life she found the Arboretum to be a place of beauty and respite. Gail served on the Education, Development, Marketing and Nominating committees. She and her favorite cousin, Lynne Fife, were regulars at the Bartlett Sunday Concerts. You could always find them sitting with friends under a tree enjoying the music, company, and a glass of wine.
Gail collected many things. She even had an antique shop in New Hampshire years ago, but throughout her life, her family and friends were her greatest treasures. Her passion for her family and those she loved is and will forever be without equal. Her humor, grace, elegance, warmth, and her absolute and unconditional love will be missed by all those who knew her and all who were lucky enough to be her friends during her incredibly well lived life.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary's Church 566 Elm Street, Stamford, CT on Thursday, June 3rd at 11:00 a.m.
