A resident of Stamford for more than 60 years, Paula was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. An English major, she graduated from University of Michigan where she met the love of her life, Robert Eppinger. The couple settled in Stamford in 1965 where they raised three sons and enjoyed 56 years of marriage.
Paula traveled extensively, visiting numerous countries and nearly all of the U.S. national parks. She enjoyed photography and documented her many travels with Robert. After he died, she continued to travel visiting family and friends, going by train to see her children and grandchildren in Pittsburgh and Boston.
One of Paula’s greatest pleasures was playing social and duplicate bridge with friends, which she did several times a week—including the day she entered the hospital just days before her death. She and Robert used to compete in sectional, regional, and national bridge tournaments which enabled her to become an ACBL Bronze Life Master.
Paula was an active member of Temple Sinai and served as president of the Temple Sinai Sisterhood in the 1970s. In elementary school, her sons would call the temple before calling the house. They still have the phone number memorized.
In addition to her family and numerous friends, Paula had many passions, including competitive bridge, word games, gardening, and chocolate. She loved doing the New York Times Sunday Crossword, Wordle, and Spelling Bee, often collaborating with grandchildren. She had been an avid tennis player when younger, then transitioned to walking daily with friends. The Very Merry Road Walkers were a fixture of the neighborhood for more than 50 years.
Paula will be dearly remembered for her vitality, enthusiasm, zest for life, optimism, love, and support.
Paula is survived by her children Jeffrey and his wife Francesmary Modugno of Pittsburgh, Penn.; Steven and his wife Julie Laukkanen of Lexington, Mass.; and Bruce and his wife Jean Siegel of Pittsburgh, Penn. Paula also leaves behind grandchildren Lauren and her husband Luis Lopez, Andrew and his wife Marina, Samantha, Benjamin, Emmanuel, and Aria, and four great-grandchildren Adrian, Nerea, Sebastian, and Emma. Paula is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at 2:00 pm at Temple Sinai in Stamford, Conn. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to either National Jewish Health or the Eppinger/Wallach Floral Fund at Temple Sinai, 458 Lakeside Drive, Stamford, CT 06903.
